__/ RYAN RAU WINS HUFF 50K, NAMED USATF ATHLETE OF THE
WEEK (LAST WEEK)
Somehow, during the busy holidays, we missed the big news that
Brighton Michigan's Ryan Rau was named USATF athlete of the week
December 31. Ryan won this honor by winning the HUFF 50K Trail Run
in 4:21:22. According to USATF's news release states:
"Running in his first ultramarathon, Rau won the men's race in 4 hours,
21 minutes, 53 seconds, despite making a wrong turn during the second
loop which cost him seven minutes. The 22-year-old Brighton, Mich.,
native faced a strong challenge from Ryne Melcher of Detroit, Mich.,
who finished as the runner-up, just 21 seconds behind Rau. Todd Scott
of Royal Oak, Mich., was third in 4:28:07.
USATF's 2002 Women's Ultradistance Runner of the Year Ann Heaslett
of Madison, Wisc., was the overall women's winner in 4:45:38. Tamara
Whitten of Indianapolis, Ind., was the runner-up in 5:04:50, with Linda
Barhorst of Fort Loramie, Ohio, third in 5:22:37.
Now in its second year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is
designed to recognize performers at all levels of the sport. USATF
names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the
USATF Web site. Selections are based on top performances and results
from the previous week."
Congratulations Ryan.

__/ LASALLE BANK CHICAGO MARATHON RAISES CAP TO 40,000
Chicago (January 6, 2003) The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon
announced it will increase its registration cap from 37,500 to 40,000
participants. For the past two years, the previous cap was filled at least
six weeks prior to Race Day. Registration began January 1 for The 2003
LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, which will take place Sunday, October
12.
"In response to the popularity and continuing growth of The LaSalle
Bank Chicago Marathon we are pleased and excited to offer this event
to a record number of participants in 2003," said Carey Pinkowski,
executive race director. "We have taken the appropriate steps to
determine that we can confidently increase the participant totals to
40,000 and continue to produce a world class event that offers a safe
and enjoyable experience for our participants, spectators, and
residents."
__/ "PERFECT 10 CLUB" HONORED AT WALT DISNEY WORLD
MARATHON 10TH ANNIVERSARY
The Walt Disney World Marathon is celebrating a magical milestone on
Jan. 12: its 10th year. And among the record field of 22,000 participants,
a unique group of 149 runners will be celebrating a magical milestone
as they make the 26.2-mile trek through the four Disney theme parks.
Dubbed the "Perfect 10 Club," these 115 men and 34 women are
competing in their 10th consecutive Disney Marathon. Race organizers
will honor the runners - representing 24 states and 19 Florida counties -
with a special edition race number and t-shirt, and through a series of
race weekend special events.
__/ CHURCHILL'S HALF MARATHON WILL START AT MONCLOVA
COMMUNITY CENTER, MARCH 9
Be sure to mark your calendar for Northwest Ohio's oldest continuing

Center, 8035 Monclova Road, Monclova, Ohio. Prize money will be
offered, plus open, masters, senior and age-group awards. The race is
