__/ ROSEVILLE BIG BIRD, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12 - Roseville's Big Bird has it all: serious competition, terrific age-group awards, tradition (this will be the 28th annual), goodies for everybody, and the chance to win a big bird (aka turkey). The 1 mile can serve as a warm up for the 4K or the certified 10K and runners from several high school cross country teams will threaten to win overall. Events begin 10:00 am, at the Roseville Parks and Recreation center, 18185 Sycamore in Roseville.

Video: http://michiganrunner.tv/2005bigbird/

__/ NCAA DIVISION I CROSS COUNTRY REGIONALS, BOWLING GREEN, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11 - Saturday is an opportunity to see the Great Lakes Regional-- the most competitive regional in the country with powerhouses Wisconsin (men), Michigan (women), Notre Dame (men and women) and Eastern Michigan (men). The top two teams from each of the nine regionals get automatic invitations to NCAA Division I Nationals in Terre Haute, Indiana, November 20. An additional 13 at-large teams will be invited. Events begin at 11:00 am, Forrest Creason Golf Course.http://ncaasports.com.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: PORTAGE INVITATIONAL - We've added Division 3 races to the Portage Invitational collection. Scott Sullivan interviews two members of the winning Hillsdale Girls team.http:// michiganrunner.tv/2006portage/

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD, MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY, BROOKLYN - We congratulate MHSAA Communications Director, John Johnson, announcer Dave Mitchell and the MHSAA team for their new audio Web casts of the state finals action. What a terrific service for family and friends who are unable to attend the meet.

__/ ING NEW YORK CITY MARATHON VIDEO - DID ANYONE WATCH? - As a home of several Macs and no PC's, we were disappointed to be left out of the Internet Video coverage of the ING New York City Marathon. Did anyone watch? If so, what did you think?

__/ SAFE WINTER RUNNING - Now that many of us are getting our miles in during the dark early morning or evening hours, being seen becomes an important safety issue. If you don't have reflective gear, consider making an investment in reflective pants, jackets, vests or the new, affordable, L.E.D. blinkers. Reflective gear is available at your local running store.

__/ ADDITIONAL SAFETY: DON RICHMOND'S TOP 10 SAFETY GUIDELINES - Don Richmond started thinking seriously about safety after he survived an enounter with a truck (http://michiganrunner.com/ feb01/miracle.html). Here are Don's "Top 10 Safety Guidelines":

1. Run as if you are invisible.

2. Be alert.

3. Run on park paths if at all possible.

4. Run facing the traffic.

5. Know your escape route if a car heads your way

6. Save headphones for the treadmill.

7. Wear reflective gear or clothing in the dark and in low light.

8. Wear bright clothing during the day, especially in the woods.

9. Avoid the woods during hunting season and don't wear white gloves if you are in the woods during deer hunting season.

10. Run defensively.

__/ CLIMB DETROIT - RACE UP THE REN CEN STAIRS, FEBRUARY 25, 2007 - The Detroit Free Press reported yesterday that the American Lung Association of Michigan is planning a "competitive stair climb at the Renaissance Center-- all 70 floors of it-- to raise money for its research and advocacy programs."-- Details:http:// www.climbdetroit.com.

__/ MILER JIM RYUN LOSES SEAT IN CONGRESS - As a political junkie I followed Tuesday's election results until the wee hours of the morning-- happy with some results and disappointed with others. One of the surprise upsets was in Kansas where Jim Ryun (R) has held the 2nd Congressional seat since the 1996 election. Democrat Nancy Boyda defeated Ryun 51% to 47%. Ryun set the high school mile record of 3:55.3 in 1965-- a record that stood for 36 years. He later set the mile world record, 3:51.1 in 1966.

__/ JEFF CRUMBAUGH PLANNING NEW TRAIL RACE IN THE UPPER PENINSULA - Jeff Crumbaugh, the wild and crazy mind behind the Keweenaw Trail Festival and the Grand Island Marathon, is planning a new trail race next August. Details are forthcoming. In the meantime think Whitefish Bay and Tahquamenon Falls.

__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES

ING NEW YORK CITY MARATHON, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 5

-- Dathan Ritzenhein, 2:14:01, 11th, debut

-- Katie McGregor, 2:32:26, 9th, debut

-- Andrew Schupp, 31, 2:37:47, Top Michigan Male

-- Linda Ewing, 45, 3:15:32, Top Michigan Female

MHSAA LOWER PENINSULA CROSS COUNTRY FINALS, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4 Teams were the story for 2006:

-- Dexter Boys won their fifth straight Division 2 title and set a new state scoring record: 28 points (1,2,5,8,12). Dexter ranked #4 nationally before the meet. As the #1 ranked team in the Midwest, they will receive an invitation to the Nike Team Nationals; however, MHSAA rules will prevent their accepting the invitation. (More on this later.) Folks in Dexter had more to celebrate Saturday night: also on Saturday, Dexter's Boys Soccer Team won the D2 championship, beating East Lansing in a shootout.

-- Pinckney Boys won their second straight Division 1 title and set another state scoring record: 27 points (1,2,7,8,9). That's right, Dexter's record lasted only 30 minutes.

-- One of the exciting things about cross country is the importance of every single runner. Just ask Rochester Adams and Livonia Churchill girls. Each team scored 112 through the fifth runner. Rochester Adams got the win because their sixth runner came in ahead of Livonia Churchill's sixth runner.

SENIOR BOWL CHARITY RUN, MOBILE, ALABAMA, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4 Arthur Mack of The Mobile Press Register reports "Michigan runners finish 1-2-3 and take top female spot in Senior Bowl Charity Run

For the Hanson's Running Club of Rochester Hills, Mich., running in races all over the world is no big thing.

So it was no surprise that the four members representing Hanson's -- Ryan Sheehan, Joshua Moen, Travis Laird and Desiree Davila -- decided to run in Saturday's Food World Senior Bowl Charity Run 10K despite the lack of a big elite field.

It paid off, as Sheehan, Moen and Laird took the overall top three places, and Davila was the overall female winner. Sheehan battled a stiff head wind in the last half of the race to win his first professional road race in a personal best of 29:02."
