__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"As in sports, in life there are losses. The protocol of
sportsmanship that guides young athletes helps us remain dignified and
gracious during those times of defeat. We learn that screaming and
hollering is futile, and that scorning others because of their
accomplishments is wrong. Most importantly, we learn that acting ugly
and sore after a loss is the only thing that makes the first place athlete a
loser."
-- Kelly Sampson, Detroit Renaissance, recipient of the MHSAA Fall
Scholar-Athlete Award Scholarship. For more on Kelly and other
Scholar- Athletes, see http://www.mhsaa.com/news/05safall.htm
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: AN INTERVIEW WITH BRIAN SELL
The running community first began to notice Brian Sell when he set the
pace for the first 20 miles at the 2004 Olympic Marathon Trials. Last
week Sell won the Austin 3M Half Marathon in a personal best 1:02:59.
Michigan Runner spoke with the Hansons-Brooks athlete shortly after
Sell was the second American to finish at the 2004 LaSalle Bank
Chicago Marathon.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: THE FROZEN FOOT RACE WITH BILL
RODGERS
The Traverse City Track Club brought American distance legend Bill
Rodgers to Traverse City as the ninth in the annual Bayshore-In-
Training Legends Series on January 21. The next day over two hundred
runners joined Rodgers for the five mile Frozen Foot Race. http://

__/ OFF TOPIC, BUT IMPORTANT (WE'RE JOURNALISTS):
HIGH SCHOOL KIDS DON'T UNDERSTAND FREEDOM OF THE
PRESS
The Knight Foundation, the foundation behind the Knight Commission
on Intercollegiate Athletics, released the results of a massive survey of
what high school students think about the First Amendment. Among the
results: more than one third of the 100,000+ students surveyed think the
that newspapers should get government approval before publishing
articles. For USA Today's coverage of this survey, see
http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2005-01-30-students-
press_x.htm
For the complete press release from the Knight Foundation, see

__/ SUPER BOWL 5K, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 6
You'll feel better about hanging out on the couch if you get in a race
earlier in the day on Sunday. The Super Bowl 5K is Chuck Block's first
race of the season and begins at 10:00 am at Playmakers in Okemos.
You can print an entry form or register online at http://
runningfoundation.com.
__/ ROAD RUNNERS SEEKS RISING RUNNING STARS
Kyle Baker, Mason, adidas/Michigan State, and Clint Verran, Rochester,
Hansons-Brooks/Eastern Michigan, each have been Roads Scholars in
recent years. Applications for the Road Runners Club of America 2005
Roads Scholar Program are online at www.rrca.org/programs/
roadsapp.pdf and are due March 31, 2005.
The Roads Scholar grants of $5,000 are designed to assist top
American post-collegiate runners who, while struggling financially, show
great promise to develop into accomplished national world-class
athletes. Fore more information, see http://www.rrca.org/news/844.html.
__/ GOOD NEWS AND BAD ABOUT RUNNING ON TV:
-- TRACK & FIELD FANS UPSET WITH ESPN'S COVERAGE OF
REEBOK INDOOR GAMES
Renowned running, track and field photographer Victah Sailer is calling
on fans to complain:
"How are we to spread the great word of track and field in America,
well certainly not by the television program I just witnessed in
shock......I think we should all be shocked and totally dismayed by a tape
delayed show.....this was not live tv......but taped and they royally blew it.
Please wake me up and tell me that ESPN is part of USA Track and
Field on Television for American viewers. I feel bad for the meet
organizers, sponsors, USATF and the fans who saw one of the greatest
indoor track meets of all time. I think we all waited to see the great WR of
a World Champion and Olympic Medalist time alotted ONE Minute
The 2nd fastest womans 3k of all time.......Zero, the big goose egg,
not one second, especially when it could have been another WR, but
the Olympic Champion had to run around woman she had lapped!!!!
In first 23 minutes, we witnessed one 400m and one 200m race!!!!!!
In your wildest dreams, do you think the TV station broadcasting the
Superbowl, would do a commentary on drugs during the game itself.
Did they watch the HS races.........both races had great moves in the
last 150m, ESPN showed the last 100 meters.....so to cut out 5-6
seconds on each race, they alotted 3 minutes to the Mens 60m.
Then we had less than 24 hours before ESPN ruined our experience. I
truly hope that this issue is addressed, as a track addict like the rest of
you........I am totally disgusted. . ."
Victah urges fans to contact ESPN at
http://sports.espn.go.com/sitetools/s/contact/espntv.html
-- OLN TO TELEVISE BOSTON MARATHON
We like OLN's coverage of the Tour de France and the X-Games. Now
we'll get to see what they can do with the Boston Marathon:
"The Outdoor Life Network (OLN) and the Boston Athletic Association
have announced a multiple-year partnership for OLN to televise the
Boston Marathon nationally, both live and tape-delayed, beginning in
2005.
OLN will provide three hours of live, wire-to-wire coverage to North
American homes, making the Boston Marathon the only U.S. road race
to receive complete, live, national coverage."

__/ ECONOMIC IMPACT OF RITE AID CLEVELAND MARATHON & 10K
TO BE DISCUSSED AT RUNNING USA ANNUAL CONFERENCE
CLEVELAND, (January 17, 2005) --- The recently completed economic
impact study of the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon & 10K on the
Cleveland community will be part of a panel discussion at the 2005
Running USA Annual Conference in San Diego in this coming
weekend.
The economic impact study, conducted by Pittsburgh-based Forward
Analytics, concluded that last year's Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon & 10K
generated more than $6.8 million for the greater Cleveland economy. It
found that the running community is very supportive of the race and
runners view it as a "must do" event.
During the panel discussion, President Jack Staph will present
conclusions from the economic impact study showing direct spending by
runners and their families and friends during the 2004 race weekend
totaled more than $2 million. Spending went for food at restaurants,
entertainment, retail purchases, ground transportation, gasoline, lodging
and purchases at the health and fitness expo. Restaurants led the
spending which totaled more than $900,000.
