__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Truly superb coverage of Around the Bay, you guys do an incredible
job.
The clip really captures the essence of this classy event.
Well done and thank you for your outstanding contribution to running
across NorTh America!"
-- John Stanton - Running Room President in an email to Art McCafferty.
__/ PAUL MCMULLEN'S THE BIG KICKER SHOW -
1996 Olympian Paul McMullen is showing his talent as a journalist in his
new venture: the Big Kicker. Paul interviews running community stars--
both
current and those of earlier eras via conference call, then archives those
calls on the Web. The first Big Kicker show debuted last week with Alan
Webb
as Paul's guest. Veteran race director Tony Mifsud was among those
who asked
Alan some pertinent questions.
Thursday night at 9:00 pm, Paul will be interviewing his coach at
Eastern
Michigan-- Bob Parks. Parks is never shy about saying what's on his
mind.
Expect him to mention the MAC schools which have dropped men's
track & field.
You can register to be part of the call at http://www.bigkickershow.com.
Archives will be available April 22.
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNERS TAKE ON CARLSBAD 5000 -
Irish Olympian and Master's Runner Monica Joyce has owned the
women's
masters race at the very competitive (14 world records) Carlsbad 5000
the
last few years. The weekend, Monica will again be competing.
Meantime, Boaz Cheboiywo (Nike/Eastern Michigan/Eldoret, Kenya)
and Dathan
Ritzenhein (Nike/Colorado/Rockford, MI) will compete for the open
division
title. It's possible the last time these two competed in the same event
was
the 2001 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. Cheboiywo
won;
then-freshman Ritz took fourth place.
__/ MARCH MADNESS & ULTRA MARATHONER PAM REED -
We get to speak with Eastern Michigan marketing students several times
a year
on the topic of women and sports marketing. Among the examples we
use in the class is one of Women and marathoning-- the longer the
distance,
the more likely that women's times catch up to those of men. Pam Reed,
twice
overall winner of the Bad Water Ultramarathon and recent finisher of
300
"non-stop" miles, was featured on the Sunday night TV show 60
minutes.
Pam was up against ultramarathoner Dean Karanas, who made the
covers of
magazines "Marathon and Beyond" and "Runner's World" last month.
We had
friends and family over to watch Michigan State men's basketball in their
game against Kentucky-- figuring we'd sneak in a switch over to that
60 minute segment.
Didn't happen. Fifteen minutes before tip-off, our Comcast Cable
connection
went on the fritz. Calls revealed that Comcast service to Ann Arbor,
Pittsfield
Township and Ypsilanti Township were affected. Service returned about
four
hours later, but I think Comcast owes us a free month-- at least.
We didn't get to see that game, but we can, however, offer one of our
favorite
interviews: State's coach Tom Izzo-- on the occasion of the annual Izzo-
Mariucci
Golf Tournament in Iron Mountain, Michigan. Mariucci and Izzo take on
the role of
auctioneers. http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/show4/
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: AROUND THE BAY ROAD RACE PASTA
DINNER -
This week we feature the Pasta Dinner of historic Around The Bay 30K.
The dinner
features Coach GP, Running Room President John Stanton, Hamilton's
CHML
radio personality Bob Bratina and all the athletes and their families who
participated in the festivities.

__/ GARY MORGAN IS MICHIGAN'S NEW RRCA REP -
1988 Olympian Gary Morgan is succeeding Robin Sarris Hallop as
Michigan
representative to the Road Runner's Club of American. Morgan
continues to
compete in international race-walking events and also runs in local and
international road races. Race directors can contact Gary at
morgansden@yahoo.com.
__/ EASTERN MICHIGAN'S WALK FOR WOMEN'S ATHLETICS -
The Fourth Annual Walk for Women's Athletics is scheduled Saturday,
April 16.
Proceeds from the walk will benefit female student-athletes at EMU and
will
go directly toward scholarship assistance as well as the athletes'
wellness.
For more information or to register, call Eric Seidelman, 487-7859.
