__/ START YOUR STREAK; GALYAN'S SOLSTICE RUN, SATURDAY,
JUNE 21
Take a tour of beautiful downtown Northville this Saturday and start your
streak of running all the Galyan's Solstice Runs. The first one begins at
8:00 am at Ford Field in downtown Northville. Doug Kurtis will be there
to autograph May/June 2003 Michigan Runner's (Doug and a Ford T-
Bird are on the cover). Prizes and Comcast video coverage are enticing
many of Michigan's fast runners, including Michigan Runner of the Year,
Laurie Decker. The course tours Northville's historic neighborhoods with
Victorian architecture and flower gardens ablaze with color.
http://northvilleparksandrec.org. Race Director Alan Whitehead has
planned an event which is sure to be the buzz of early summer racing in
Michigan.
__/ WALL STREET JOURNAL - FRONT PAGE - HANSONS
No kidding. Complete with the Wall Street Journal's famous line-drawing
portraits. Stefan Fatsis profiles Keith and Kevin Hanson and their
Olympic Developent Program, in the article "Jog Down Memory Lane?
No Thanks." The profile appeared on the front page, "above the fold" on
June 10, 2003.
Kevin says the article has had an effect: "We were shocked to see that
they put the story on the front page. It looks like it has worked as a
couple of companies are now willing to fund the women's program on
an equal basis ( 6 figures a year). Michigan has a great running
community and Keith and I are proud to be a part of it."
__/ APINE STRIDERS IN GAYLORD TUNE UP FOR ALPENFEST
The Alpine Striders running club in Gaylord is holding a series of runs to
help runners tune up for the Alpenfest 7 Mile and 5K in Gaylord, July 19.
Runs are at 6:00 pm and start in Aspen Park (July 2 or at the Gaylord
High School track (July 9, July 12, July 16). Runs will continue on July
30 (Aspen Park). http://sport.mlive.com/sport/alpinestriders/
__/ MATTI KILPELANEN: POLE VAULT IS MORE POPULAR
We had a chance to to talk with Matti Kilpelanen, who set the Masters
indoor world record-in the pole vault at the EMU Classic in February.
Kilpelanen, 57, taught Physical Education in Detroit Schools, and now
coaches jumps and hurdles for Canton High School. We don't know very
many coaches who can demonstrate the pole vault. Kilpelanen says the
pole vault has had a resurgence in popularity since high school athletics
have added the pole vault to girls events.
__/ NCAA OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD HAS SURPRISE
CHAMPIONS
Nick Willis won the 1500 semi-final heat in a scintillating 3:xx, but
suffered one of those tangles that comes along with the 1500. In the
finals, Willis's heels were clipped and he fell. The fall cost him the
chance to score and to be All American. He wound up tenth in finals.
Jordan Desillets, Eastern Michigan, placed second (8:29.44) in one of
the fastest 3000 meter Steeplechases ever. Arkansas' Dan Lincoln took
first (8:26.65), as expected, after winning the 10,000 the day before. The
10,000 is not Lincoln's usual event. Defending champion Boaz
Cheboiywo had the fastest 10 time going into the meet, but finished in
10th place. Ken Ferguson, South Carolina, ran hurt in both the 110 and
400 hurdles and didn't make the finals.
Some additional Michigan finalists
Brit Klannert, Eastern Michigan, javelin, 4th, 164-5, (All American)
Becky Breisch, Nebraska, Shot Put, 1st, 58-03.25 (All American)
Nate Brannen, Michigan, 800 meter, 5th, 1:47:xx (All American)
Boaz Cheboiywo, Eastern Michigan, 5000, 10th, 13:59.72 ; 10,000
10th, 28:54.62
Stephanie Linz, Michigan, High Jump, 7th, 5-10 3/4
April Phillips, Michigan, Hammer, 10th, 194-1; Shot Put, 10th, 51-7
Rebecca Walter, Michigan, 5000, 12th 16:39:35,
Melissa Bickett, Michigan, Discus, 7th
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER ON THE ROAD: CADILLAC
Cadillac Convention and Visitor Bureau Director, Carol Potter, took us
on some Cadillac back roads to see the new Clam River Greenway, a
new part of the extensive pathway and trail system in the area. In fact,
you could train for your next ultra by jumping on the 92 mile pathway
from Cadillac to Grand Rapids, most of which is paved. Carol also
showed us the new bench dedicated to runner and Cadillac native, Kris
Eggle. A National Park Ranger, Kris was killed in the line of duty last
year. The bench is an intricate, carved and bronze work of art, located at
the trailhead of the Clam River Greenway. And while you are in the
neighborhood, stop at Ruby Tuesday's to see Cadillac's athletes
featured on the walls. You'll see decathlete, Phil McMullen, Olympic
miler, Paul McMullen, golfer, Walter Hagen and snowboarder Cammie
Potter, among others.
__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
I think that it's important as a runner to have the strength of a 10k runner
and the speed of a 1500 meter runner.
--Dan Lincoln, Arkansas, 10,000 meter champion, steeplechase
champion, 2003, NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field, as reported
by http://letsrun.com.
