IAAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: MARATHON - Michigan's Clint Verran and Ryan Shay, will be competing in the marathon for USA in Paris on Friday.

UPCOMING RACES

JAZZ FEST 4 MILE - Saturday - AUGUST 30, 2003 8:30 AM - Doug Kuris is still looking for volunteers for the race. Call 734 591-0666 to volunteer. You'll be home before noon unless you stay around for more Jazz. We have live entertainment under the Absopure Tent and lots of great food such as bagels, bananas, cookies and Fruit Bars from Edy's.

There will be Free Michelob Ultra Beer on tap if you have a race number or volunteer shirt. The course will be a delight to the eyes with great monuments, a wonderful view of the Ambassador Bridge and Windsor waterfront.

The Jazz Diva logo will appear on cool CD holders that will be this year's age group awards, plus Border's gift certificates for the overall winners.Jazz Fest 4 Miler Entry Forms are still available at all your local running stores as well as on line at http://www.detroitjazzfest.com. Click on "Enter Flash Site" to get to the Fun Run registration. For more information call Music Hall at 313 963-2366.

CELEBRATE WESTLAKE - In 1991 the City of Westlake Mayor Dennis Clough and the founding sponsor, St. John West Shore Hospital, agreed to host a five-mile charity run in Westlake, Ohio. Since 1991, Celebrate Westlake has raised over 1.1 million dollars for local charities. Over the years, Celebrate Westlake has become an annual community event, comprised of such events as a 5-mile run, 3-mile walk, inline skate competition and a kid's fun run. Free food and refreshments are provided for participants and spectators. Music and children's activities make it a fun day for the entire family.

MERCY GENERAL HEALTH 5K - Mercy General Health Partners is presenting the 2003 edition of Run For Your Health. This first-class 5k event, along with Muskegon's Shoreline Spectacular Festival, is a healthy and fun way to celebrate Labor Day. We think you'll like their course, which includes the boardwalk along the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline.

CADILLAC FESTIVAL OF RACES - This event gets a little wild this year with its inclusion of a triathon, that includes a 5KR, 12MB AND A 2M Kayak. The new tri, along with the 10K and 5K run, indicates that the Cadillac Festival of Races is getting very serious.

PART VIII: DOUG KURTIS MARATHON TRAINING SERIES: FUN - In this segment, Doug talks about having some fun with your training. The twelve part series is sponsored by Running Fit (http://runningfit.com). Doug's training charts are suitable for First Timers, Intermediate, Advanced, and Ace marathoners. http:// michiganrunner.tv/ 2003marathon/.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK - - "After a race, the only person who cares about your time is you." -- Doug Kurtis on Doug Kurtis Marathon Training Series #8

MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES - Race series events are open to Michigan residents; you do not have to register with the Michigan Runner to participate. Each runner's top 10 results will count at the conclusion of the series. Another way to think about this is that each runner's worst results will be thrown out. Missing one race will not hurt anyone's standings. For results and standings see http:// michiganrunner.net/news/raceseries03_standings.html
