JULY 31
1234 runners and walkers celebrated the 30th running of Steve's Run
on the roads, on the trails, on the fairway, in the Wildlife refuge, on
campus, and in the cemetary.
In the first of several video's of the 2004 Steve's Run, watch to see
which runners jump over the stone wall and which ones go around.
http://michiganrunner.tv/2004stevesrun/.
Additional videos will feature Joe Piane, Notre Dame's cross-country
and track and field coach, Ron Gunn, founder and director of Steve's
Run, and Hal Higdon, who's family has been participating in Steve's
Run since the early years of the race.
__/ THE LEGEND 5 & 10 MILE TRAIL RUN, LAINGSBURG,
SATURDAY, AUGUST 7
The Legend is brought to you by Running Fit's Dances with Dirt crew in
Sleepy Hollow State Park in Laingsburg, just North of Lansing. Sleepy
Hollow State Park has 2,600 acres of hardwood forest, prairie grassland
and 41 acre Lake Ovid. The trail is an awesome run. The 10-mile run
circles Lake Ovid and several other small lakes and is a beautiful,
lightly hiked and biked area of Michigan. The race starts at 8:00 am at
the beach parking area. Register online at http://runningfit.com.
__/ EASTPOINTE LIONS CLUB OX ROAST, SUNDAY, AUGUST 8
Kenny Park in Eastpointe is the site of the third annual 5K and 1 Mile
Fun Run. Kenny Park is 1/2 mile East of Gratiot between 9 and 10 mile
roads. 8:30 am is the start time and a pancake breakfast comes with
your entry fee. Following the race is the annual Eastepointe Lions Club
Ox Roast festival. For more information, call Kim Lubicki, (586)
776-1918.
__/ MICHIGAN STATE NAMES NEW CROSS COUNTRY HEAD
COACHES;
Michigan State added a pair of new head coaches to its staff August 3
when Walt Drenth and Rita Arndt-Molis, both Michigan natives, joined
the Spartan program. Drenth will be the head coach of the MSU men's
cross country team and will be an assistant coach for the men's
track and field squad, while Arndt-Molis will fill the same positions
on the women's side.
The hirings fill the void left when Jim Stintzi left Michigan State to
accept a position as head women's track and cross country coach at
Wisconsin.
Drenth comes to Michigan State after serving the past eight seasons as
head men's and women's cross country coach and assistant track coach
at Arizona State, while Arndt-Molis has been a cross country and track
and field assistant coach the past two seasons at the University of
South Florida.

__/ TIM BROE RUNS OLYMPIC "A" STANDARD TO REALIZE OLYMPIC
DREAM
Earlier this year, Running Network TV began a series of interviews with
the 2003 USATF 5000 meter champion, Tim Broe. After surgery on his
foot in the Fall which delayed training, Tim Broe's Olympic dream was
anything but certain. With neither the Olympic "A" or "B" standard going
into the Olympic trials, Tim's chances largely depended on his winning
the 5000 meter race. He did win, but the time was 13:27.36, short of
the "B" standard of 13:25.40 and the "A" standard of 13:21.50.
The plan was to run at the Crystal Palace in London, July 30, at the
Norwich Union Classic, in a race which would include Haile
Gebresellaise, Alistair Cragg, and Craig Mottram. Gebresellaise won the
race which he said would be his last in London, in 12:55.51. As for
Tim Broe, he ran 13:18.59, a PB of nearly 6 seconds, 3 seconds better
than the "A" standard. This means that Broe is on the Olympic team, and
that Jonathan Riley, who already had the "A"
standard, is also on the team.
We'll be watching that 5000 meter semi-final on August 25; the final is
August 28. For the Running Network series on Tim Broe, see
http://michiganrunner.tv/archives.html.
__/ ESPN CLASSIC - ROAD TO ATHENS
We've been enjoying ESPN Classic's Road To Athens, a retrospective
series on the events and athletes of the Olympic games. The series is
broadcast each weekday evening, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in these
weeks before the Olympic games. Last week, the show featured
the first women's Olympic marathon in 1984. It was a thrill to watch
Joan Benoit take that race out from the start. A few days later, the show
featured Henry Marsh, American record holder in the steepelchase, and
we were able to watch Brian Diemer chase down Marsh in the last
few meters of the 1984 race to win the bronze medal.
__/ BRIANA SHOOK SETS AMERICAN RECORD IN STEEPLECHASE
At the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Sacramento, Briana Shook led the
steeplechase from the beginning, won easily, and broke the American
record by 10 seconds.
Then, we were sad, as we heard that Shook had missed the first water
jump and was disqualified. No national title; no American record.
Fortunately, the steeplechase is not yet an Olympic event for women;
Shook did not miss out on the Olympic team.
This week, we are happy to report that Briana Shook set that record
Saturday, July 31, at the KBC Night of Athletics meet in Heusden-Zolder,
Belgium. She ran 9:39.32 for the new American record, and was named
Athlete of the Week by USA Track & Field.

__/ USA MASTERS OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Doug Goodhue mentioned at Steve's Run that he would be competing

Illinois. Competition for athletes 30 and up begins Thursday,
August 5 and continues through Sunday, August 8. A significant
