After winning the men's 5,000 meters at the 2004 Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Tim Broe proved his dominance at that distance in road competition Sunday at the 2004 USA Men's 5 km Championship. The event was hosted by the CVS/Pharmacy Downtown 5K in Providence R.I.

Broe won the race in a new Championships record time of 13 minutes, 37 seconds. Former Notre Dame standout Ryan Shay was the runner- up in 14:02, with Matt Gabrielson third in 14:06, Ahman Dirks fourth and Luke Watson fifth. Both Dirks and Watson finished the race in 14:16.

With his runner-up finish in Providence, Shay takes over the lead in the 2004 USA Running Circuit men's standings. Shay currently has 64 points, with 2004 Olympic men's marathon silver medalist Meb Keflezighi second with 54 points and Dan Browne third with 50 points.
