Dexter-Ann Arbor Numbers, Like Last Hill, Rise

Parker Roth won the 10K in 35:28.

ANN ARBOR (6/4/06) - Like the hill at the end of the Dexter-Ann Arbor Half Marathon, attendance at the 33-year-old race keeps going up. Registration soared to more than 6,400 this year, despite rainy weather. Other records were felled as well.

Steven Crane, 24, of Ypsilanti, broke the men's 5K course record by six seconds, finishing in 14:52. Crane has run 14:16 on the track for 5K, but this was his first time running Dexter. "That last mile is tough because it is all uphill," he said.

Suzanne Larsen, 28, of Fenton, who won the 2004 women's 5K, did so again. Her 17:57 fell shy of her 17:28 PR, but she'll take it.

"I barely got under 19 minutes her last year," said Larsen. "I ran 18:22 winning in 2004. So 17:57 is my best time here."

The 10K winners were Parker Roth of Grosse Pointe (35:38) and Kalli Williams of Ann Arbor (38:06).

Emmanuel Kiprop Korir, 25, a Kenyan now living in Grand Rapids, claimed the men's half marathon in 1:05:14. Rachel Kinsman, 32, of Archbold, Ohio, was top woman in 1:16:25.

Korir's time was the fastest since 1993, when Scott Fry set the 1:03:52 course record. Kinsman's effort was best by a woman since Laurel Park's 1996 mark of 1:14:56.

"I ran 1:13:55 at the 2003 Grandma's Half Marathon," said Kinsman. "But I'm coming back after having a baby a few months ago. I'm very happy with 1:16 today."

Jackie Rzepecki, 27, of Rochester finished second behind Kinsman in 1:20:11. "She (Kinsman) took off like a bullet at the start," said Jackie Rzepecki, 27, of Rochester, second in 1:20:11. "She went out in 5:40 for the first mile and I never saw her again."

Kyle Baker, 30, of Grand Rapids, took second in the men's half marathon. His 1:05:51 was among the top 10 times in the history of the race.

The Dexter-Ann Arbor Run is presented by Comerica and hosted by the Ann Arbor Track Club. For complete results, go to www.michiganrunner.net/results/ searchable.html MR
