Hidden Forest Trail Run, Oakland County, Oct. 12 View fall colors on 8.5-, 5.5- and 2.5-mile runs around Crooked Lake in Independence Oaks Park (I-75 to Sashabaw Road exit, 2.5 miles north to park entrance). Hell-O-Ween 10K, Hell, Oct. 26 Haunt yourself with this "very challenging course run on dirt roads," starting at 8 a.m. Parking at Hell Creek Ranch, about a mile from the race site. Roseville Big Bird, Nov. 9 Celebrate the 25th year of these popular 10K and 4K runs, held on flat, fast courses through residential neighborhoods. The Roseville High School Marching Band fires up runners with foot-stomping blues. New this year will be Michigan Runner TV coverage, with race highlights viewable online beginning Nov. 14. Ann Arbor Turkey Trot, Nov. 16 Includes 5K, 10K, high school club competition and a 200-meter fun run, plus Iron Turkey Classic awards for top combined 5K and 10K times. Held at Hudson Mills Metropark, on North Territorial Road west of Huron River Drive. The 5K starts at 9 a.m., 10K at 10, fun run at 11, all on flat, fast courses. Mt. Baldhead Challenge, Saugatuck/Douglas, Sept. 20

The 9 a.m. 15K is an experience not to miss, with a course that starts in artistic Saugatuck, winds through Douglas, climbs 282 steps of the Mt. Baldhead sand dune, winds through Lake Michigan dunes and woods before heading home. Races for the Cure, Grand Rapids and Battle Creek, Sept. 27

Michigan's furniture and cereal cities offer fall versions of these fund-raisers for the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Hoffmaster Trail Run, Norton Shores, Nov. 8 This 10th annual 10K (more or less) starts at 10 a.m. on a course that's insanely beautiful, boasting ups and downs on loose sand, plus a 1.5-mile stretch alongside Lake Michigan. The 'Burg Run, Laingsburg, Nov. 16 Fourth annual 10K and 5K start at 2 p.m. and traverse the cross-country course at Laingsburg High School, 8008 Woodbury. Lansing Turkeyman Trot, Nov. 27 Director Chuck Block's 5K past the State Capitol and on the Lansing River Trail drew almost 400 runners last year.
