2003-2004 High School Runners of the Year Honorable Mentions
Scott Sullivan September 2004 Michigan Runner
Nicole Bush
The Wyoming Kelloggsville senior was a mile away from her fourth-
straight Division 3 cross country title when she faltered, victim of an iron
deficiency. Bush staggered to the finish, dropping from first place to
second-to-last, then was taken by ambulance to a hospital. She was back on track (literally) by spring, winning 1600- and 3200-
meter championships, both in D-3 record times. Bush heads to Michigan
State University with 10 state crowns in tow. Photo by Jim Lippert.
Amber Smith
The 2002-03 Michigan High School Runner of the Year swept Division 2
Upper Peninsula cross country, 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter crowns for
the fourth straight year. That's 16 state titles in as many tries. Westwood

The last of eight children in a Central Lake clan that includes four-time
state champ Ryan Shay and two-time state champ Casey Shay, lived up
to his gene pool. Shay, who will run this fall for Michigan State, won Division 4 titles in
cross country and at 3200 meters (9:22.07, a new D-4 finals record). Photo by Jim Lippert
