Five State Women Eye Olympic Marathon Trials

Five Michigan women and two former residents have qualified to compete in the Women's Olympic Team Marathon Trials in St. Louis April 3.

The event's criterion-style course will pass through historic Forest Park,site of the 1904 World's Fair. The window to qualify remains open until March 5.

All state qualifers have met the USATF "B" standard of 2:48. None have made the 2:39:59 "A" standard, which provides the bonus of paid expenses.

Representing our state will be:

Monica Hostetler - Age 27. Current residence: Rochester Hills. Affiliations: Hansons-Brooks/Anderson and Indiana Universities/LaGrange, Ind. Best qualifying time: 2:41:38, 2001 New York City Marathon. Monica was the first woman to join the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project. Her breakthrough race was the 2001 U.S. Half Marathon National Championships, which led to her first chance to run on a World Championship team.

Anne Flynn - Age 39. Current residence: Augusta. Affiliations: University of Iowa/Buffalo, N.Y. Best qualifying time: 2:44:58, 2002 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. Anne, a physics teacher at Delton Kellog High School, is a Trials veteran; in 2000, she finished mid-pack on a hot, humid day in Columbia, S.C.

Seana Larson - Age 33. Current residence: Dexter. Affiliations: Eastern Michigan and Wake Forest Universities/Ann Arbor Pioneer High School. Best qualifying time: 2:45:59, 2003 Quad Cities Marathon, Moline, Ill. Seana was the top Michigan female at the 2003 Crim 10-miler and 2000 Michigan Female Runner of the Year.

Carly Graytock - Age 25. Current residence: Rochester Hills. Affiliations: Hansons-Brooks/Bucknell University/Forest City, Pa. Best qualifying time: 2:47:17, 2003 Grandma's Marathon. Carly trained in Boston after college, then joined the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project. She won the 2003 Roseville Big Bird Run 10K in 36:09.

Sarah Plaxton - Age 33. Current residence, Highland. Affiliations: Midland Bullock Creek High School. Best qualifying time: 2:46:27, 2003 Philadelphia Marathon. Sarah is a five-time winner of the Bay Shore Marathon in Traverse City.

Former Michigan residents to watch:

Cindy Barber Keeler - Age 45. Current residence: Clermont, Fla. Affiliations: Eastern Michigan University/Lincoln Park. Best qualifying time: 2:46:32, 2002 Quad Cities Marathon, Moline, Ill. Cindy, the first woman to have qualified for the Olympic Marathon Trials six times, often shows up at Michigan races during the summer.

Lori Stich Zimmerman - Age 33. Current residence: Cedar Creek, Tex. Affiliations: Ripon College/Emory University School of Law/Morely-Stanwood High School. Best qualifying time: 2:42:59, 2002 Motorola Austin Marathon. Lori was the top Michigan finisher at the 2000 Olympic Trials. She has licenses to practice law in Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, Texas and Washington. MR
