===================== QUOTES FOR A NEW YEAR ===================== Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink and swore his last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever. ~Mark Twain

People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas. ~Author Unknown

Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account. ~Oscar Wilde

I do think New Year's resolutions can't technically be expected to begin on New Year's Day, don't you? Since, because it's an extension of New Year's Eve, smokers are already on a smoking roll and cannot be expected to stop abruptly on the stroke of midnight with so much nicotine in the system. Also dieting on New Year's Day isn't a good idea as you can't eat rationally but really need to be free to consume whatever is necessary, moment by moment, in order to ease your hangover. I think it would be much more sensible if resolutions began generally on January the second. ~Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones's Diary

We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential. ~Ellen Goodman

=============================================== 2008 WALT DISNEY WORLD MARATHON-ANOTHER SELLOUT =============================================== Once again, the WDW Marathon Weekend is sold out, as thousands of runners from all over the world ascent on this great travel destination. GLSP cameras were there last year and captured some of the excitement of the various events, including the domination of the half marathon by the Hansons-Brooks team. ============================================== 2008 MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES ============================================== Michigan Runner editor Scott Sullivan says that winners of the Michigan Runner of the Year awards are both talented and tenacious. Each year we try to choose competitive events, at various distances and with an eye to the geography of Michigan. Points are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in open, masters, and senior divisions. The senior results are age-graded. Extra points are awarded for the Fifth Third River Bank Run 25K, the Crim 10 Mile and the Detroit Free Press Marathon. Only points from only the top 10 races count.

Open 1st - 30 or 50 2nd - 20 or 25 3rd - 10 or 15

Master 1st - 15 or 30 2nd - 10 or 20 3rd - 5 or 10

Senior 1st - 3 or 6 2nd - 2 or 4 3rd - 1 or 2

These are the races which will determine the 2008 Michigan Runner of the Year:

======================================================= ========== FRONT LINE RACING TEAM INCLUDES MANY MICHIGAN RUNNERS OF THE YEAR ======================================================= ========== In a recent email about Front Line Racing Team's Women's Open Team at the December 8, USATF National Club Cross Country Championships, "Relay" Fred Vanhala pointed out "Suzanne Larsen is a former Michigan Runner magazine Runner of the Year and was running in her first cross country meet."

We've been impressed with Fred's recruiting; in fact a number of people competing for Front Line Racing Team at the December meet have been Michigan Runners, Masters Runners and Senior Runners of the Year:

================================================= IAAF AWARDS GOLD AND SILVER LABELS FOR ROAD RACES ================================================= Larry Eder's RunBlog alerted us to these IAAF rankings:

"The Labels are attributed to races that satisfy a number of important criteria concerning the organizational standard of the race, course measurement, safety and medical standards and media services. The deciding factors for the attribution of a Gold or Silver Label are the number of elite athletes engaged and the level of international TV coverage achieved by the participating races."

=============================================== NEW: HANSONS RUNNING SHOP 2008 RUNNING CIRCUIT =============================================== Hansons Running Shops have been sponsors of local running events for many years. This year, they are "spicing up the competition" with a new running series of 8 road races and 5 cross country races. Among the cool features is a one-time entry form and fee, a Brooks technical shirt and updated scores sent to you after each event. For race dates and details on scoring and awards, see http://hansons-running.com

=========================================== ZANGLIN RUN TO CONTINUE AS REFUGE RIVER RUN =========================================== Last week our reporting that the Zanglin Downriver Run had ended was happily wrong: David Howell of the Total Runner sent us this good news: "I see the end of the Zanglin Downriver Run was listed as one of your top stories of 2007. There have been some new (very recent) developments with that event.

There will be a race in 2008 in downtown Trenton on Friday night, June 13, a continuation of the Zanglin Downriver Run (formerly known as the Downriver Treadmill Run). A partnership of the Friends of the Detroit River (of which I am Chairman) and the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance has agreed to take over the event. The event will be the same, but it will now be called the Refuge River Run. We hope the run will raise money for both organizations, but we also hope to raise awareness of the issues and causes we represent, namely the protection and improvement of the Detroit River and the support of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. This event is a very appropriate vehicle for such awareness, since the course runs along the Detroit River and within the boundaries of the Wildlife Refuge.

The new race director (taking over for my wife, Eve) will be Roger Sheldon, manager of the Total Runner store in Southgate. Questions may be directed to Roger at (734) 282-1101."

================================================= C-VILLE CHILL 5K, COOPERSVILLE, SATURDAY, FEB. 23 ================================================= We had a nice chat with Don Pratt, the race director for the C-Ville Chill 5K which is held in conjunction with the Coopersville WinterFest the last Saturday of February. The 5K begins at 10:00 am, 247 Church Street. Winterfest activities include the "whacky" Outhouse 500 in which teams parade, then race their decorated outhouses down Main Street. A Rotary Chili Blast, Jaycees Beer Tent, and an evening concert round out the festivities. Contact Don or Nancy Pratt at (616) 889-8626.
