__/__/__/__/__/__/___/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/ __/__/ ======================================================= =========== ANN ARBOR HEALTHY START FESTIVAL OF MILES, SATURDAY, JAN. 12, 2008 ======================================================= =========== Got a taste of running in shorts during this January thaw? Well, the temparature will be dropping by the weekend, but Running Fit's Ann Arbor Healthy Start Festival of Miles will be indoors at the University of Michigan Track. Log some indoor miles, sign up the kids for their first race of the year, or run a 60m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m or relay race on the track. Events include a health and fitness expo, drawings and give-a-ways. For times and details see http://www.runhealthystart.com

======================================================= OAKLAND COUNTRY, CRIM LAUNCH BROOKSIE WAY HALF MARATHON ======================================================= We're excited about the new Brooksie Way Half Marathon scheduled for October 5, 2008. Oakland Country Executive L. Brooks Patterson announced initial plans for the race as part of a quality of life initiative at his State of the County speech in February, 2007. He hoped to model the race after the Crim. Then, four days later, Patterson's son, Brooks, Jr., age 28, died in a snowmobile accident. The younger Patterson was an avid outdoorsman, whose zest for life was known as the Brooksie Way.

We're also excited that Patterson formed a partnership with Oakland County and the Crim Fitness Foundation. Deb Kiertzner, Race Director of the Crim Festival of Races, will also direct The Brooksie Way Half Marathon.

At last Friday's Kick-Off, Runnin' Gear's Paul Coughlin and Greg Guidice, leaders of the race organizing committee, described a scenic and challenging half marathon course which begins and ends at Oakland University's Meadow Brook Hall, goes through downtown Rochester, and includes sections of the Clinton River Trail and the Paint Creek Trail. A 5K is also being planned. For Greg and Paul's course description, see http://michiganrunner.tv/2008brooksie_way/

============================================= BOAZ CHEBOIYWO TALKS ABOUT SITUATION IN KEYNA ============================================= Boaz Cheboiywo, NCAA Cross Country Champion in 2001 and NCAA 10,000 meter Champion in 2002 (Eastern Michigan/Nike), is originally from the village of Tirap, Kenya-- not far from Eldoret. Eldoret is the scene of some of the worst violence now taking place in Kenya. Boaz now lives in Ypsilanti and we spoke with him yesterday about the situation in his home country. His family are all OK for now. A keen observer of both American and Kenyan government and society, Boaz wishes his country could return to the peaceful nation of a united people with a common national anthem, a common flag and a common cause. "We don't say we're from a certain tribe; we say we're from Kenya," he says. The current situation involves the distribution of national resources and is the fault of people at the top. It's "the kids in school and the little man who's hurt" in the current situation.

Boaz talked about Lucas Sang, the Olympic runner who was stoned to death on New Year's Day. Sang was involved in Kenya's national athletic committee, was recognized by many. He was not involved in the trouble; he was walking home and happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Boaz is excited about the U.S. presidential primaries and democracy here. "People are looking at Obama as a real candidate; people are not looking at race," he says.

Boaz is also excited about the upcoming indoor season because he's happy about his training and being injury-free. Look for Boaz at the Reebok Indoor Games in Boston on January 26 where he plans to run either the mile or the 3000. You can also catch Boaz running the mile at Eastern Michigan' Invitational on Saturday this week.

======================================================= ================== WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR RUNNING? TRY GOOD FORM RUNNING CLINICS AT PLAYMAKERS ======================================================= ================== We think this is an idea whose time has come. Playmakers has a *free* "Good Form Running Clinic" every Thursday evening at 6:00 pm in the Okemos store. Just whom would you trust to show you good form? How about Olympian Grant Robison? Grant and the staff from Playmakers lead the weekly clinics which will show 4 simple steps. Web: http://playmakers.com/

======================================================= =========== DEBORAH LAZAROFF SET TO RUN 100TH MARATHON & 15TH DISNEY ON SUNDAY ======================================================= =========== Deborah Lazaraoff of Jackson runs a lot of marathons. Along the way, she ran the very first Walt Disney World Marathon in 1994 and then she ran every single one since. This Sunday, Lazaroff and David Agnew of Clarkston will be going for their 15th consecutive Walt Disney World Marathon. Deborah is going for an additional milestone: her 100th marathon. Michigan Runner will be there to cheer them on.

======================================================= ======== TORTOISE AND HARE OPEN NEW STORE AT WASHTENAW COMMUNITY COLLEGE ======================================================= ======== Washtenaw Community College students have a dream-come-true with the brand new Health & Fitness Center that opened in Fall of 2007. The Center has a lap pool, an indoor track, and state-of-the-art equipment along with personal training and exercise programs. Now WCC students can get fitted for shoes, gear and athletic apparel right in the Center at the new Tortoise and Hare Running & Fitness shop. Stefan Kiesbye said the new shop opened for business earlier this week.

========================================= FIFTH THIRD RIVER BANK RUN ADDS 10K EVENT ========================================= "Fifth Third River Bank Run officials have announced that a 10K Run will be offered for the first time on the second Saturday of May, leading off race day events at 7:30 a.m. The 25K will continue to feature the Wheelchair Racing and Handcycle divisions at 7:50a, followed by the 25K Run at 8:00 a.m., 5K Run at 8:10 a.m. and 5K Walk at 8:15 a.m. "We've been talking for a number of years about initiating a mid- distance event to act as a stepping stone distance between the 5K Run and 25K," explains Kristen Aidif, Race Director, Fifth Third River Bank Run. "With a record turn-out for the 30th Anniversary of the Fifth Third River Bank Run this past year, we think the timing is right for a new event to kick things off on Saturday, May 10!" The 10K Run will start on Monroe Avenue and finish on Ottawa Avenue, sharing some of the existing 25K and 5K Run courses. It will feature three Aid Stations and prize money similar to the 5K Run with $500 for first place, $300 for second place and $200 for first place." -- Fifth Third River Bank Run Press Release Course Map and Online Registration: http://53riverbankrun.com

Reynolds is now a school athletic admiistrator in Tucson, Arizona. He has officiated at Olympic Trials, NCAA and USATF meets as well as the Olympic Games.

========================== CHAD SCHIEBER MEMORIAL RUN ========================== Folks in Midland have established a new run to honor Chad Schieber, the Midland police officer who died during the 2007 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon.
