__/ BILL RODGERS TO APPEAR IN TRAVERSE CITY FRIDAY NIGHT
AND SATURDAY
Over the past nine years, the Traverse City Track Club and the
Bayshore Marathon & 10K have brought the legends of American
distance running to Traverse City. Speakers have included Olympians,
Olympic Medalists, multiple Boston Marathon winners and top authors in
our sport.
Bill Rodgers continues the tradition Friday, January 21, 7:00 pm at
the Oelson Center, Northwest Michigan College. In addition to his talk
on Friday, Rodgers will hand out awards and sign autographs at the
Frozen Foot Race which begins at 10:00 am, Saturday, Eastern
Elementary School. The downtown Running Fit will also host Rodgers
for a "meet and greet" Saturday, 1:00 pm. For more information
see http://www.bayshoremarathon.org/BillRogersFlyer.htm.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER CONTRIBUTOR OF THE YEAR: PATRICIA
BALL DLUGOKINSKI
Michigan Runner magazine named Patricia Ball Dlugokinksi
"Contributor of the Year, 2004". Ron Marinucci writes, "It's great when a
person can make a difference in someone's life. This year's MR
Contributor of the Year made a positive impact on the lives of more than
10,000 runners.
The Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon had a big year in 2004.
It became, in the words of state marathon legend Doug Kurtis, 'one of
the superstars of marathon events,' drawing a record 10,318 entrants to
its sundry races."
For the complete profile on Pat Ball Dlugokinski, see

__/ 2005 MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES ANNOUNCED
The Michigan Runner Race Series begins with Bay City's annual
St. Patrick's Day 8K on March 20. Michigan Runner magazine uses the
ten best performances from these races to determine the Michigan
Runner magazine's runner of the year. We select races for
their level of competition, to balance the calendar and Michigan's
geography and to include a variety of distances. Finally, we throw in
a trail run and a wild-card to feature some of Michigan's exciting
running events. For example, check out the Michigan Runner TV show
on the Lake Superior Shore Run to see why a trip to Marquette is worth
it:

__/ BOB PARKS ON WESTERN MICHIGAN'S BRING BACK TRACK
Bob Parks, retired track and cross-country coach at Eastern Michigan
and former coach at Western Michigan, has been looking into the
history of NCAA D1 Cross Country: "Just for kicks, I checked as to
whether any other team that had ever won the NCAA Div.I cross country
championship, had ever dropped the sport besides our beloved
Broncos and found that out of the 40 or so teams which had won the
crown, only one had. Oregon State dropped both their womens' and
mens' teams in the 70s, but have now started up the womens' again,
with rumors that the men are coming back too. After considerable
success through the years, OSU hired a poor coach (for both, but likely
he couldn't even handle one) and he destroyed it, probably the main
reason for their dropping it. A former WMU AD told me, programs get
dropped because of poor records and lousy coaching. This was likely
true at Oregon State, but it sure wasn't at Western Michigan University."
