SUPER 5K, NOVI, FEBRUARY 3

Running Fit's Randy Step has a certain way with words. Here's what Randy has to say about the Super 5K on Super Sunday in Novi: "Consider racing in Michigan this year as you choose your event goals. With a difficult economy and gas over three bucks, running in Michigan makes more sense than ever. You'll save some cash and help the local economy. To start, why travel to the Super Bowl when you can run the Super 5K in Novi on February 3rd and come home with a very useable pint glass to use during the game where you will have the best seat in the house. ==================================================== TOP MARATHONER WESLY NGETICH DIES IN KENYAN VIOLENCE ==================================================== Race Results Weekly and Grandma's Marathon report that Wesly Ngetich died in the Kenyon violence on Monday. In addition to winning Grandma's in 2007 and 2005, Ngetich was third in the 2005 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, second at the 2006 Chevron Houston Marathon and second at the 2007 Austin Marathon. Ngetich was scheduled to return to Grandmas in hopes of being the only three time winner of the Duluth, Minnesota event. Grandmas reports that four other men have also won the event twice in the events 31-year history: Garry Bjorklund, Dick Beardsley, Doug Kurtis and Patrick Maturi.

Reuters reports that Ngetich was a victim of a poisoned arrow attack during fighting in his home town of Trans Mara, at the edge of world famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve on Monday.

Michigan Runner TV 's video of the 2005 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon shows Ngetich running with the leaders throughout the marathon and also shows Ngetich accepting his third place award. See the shows titled "The Marathon" and "International Awards Ceremony." HANDWARMERS FOR THIS SINGLE DIGIT WEATHER

We'd never thought about handwarmers until the National Football Conference championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants. Game-time temperatures were below zero and a sponsor made handwarmers available to fans at Lambeau Field. Earlier this week we read Mary Lou Day's column in the Running Journal in which she discusses cold weather gear. Mary Lou uses hand warmers inside her gloves when the temperature is below 20 degrees; she says her hands can stay toasty for about eight hours. Google "handwarmers" to find many sources online.

GREAT PERFORMANCES ROAD RACING

Last week we forgot to check results from the Chevron Houston Marathon. Luckily, Steve Menovich reminds us: "I was just reviewing the January 16 Michigan Runner e-mail and noticed that one great performance was missing from the list. I know all the runners listed had great times, but Marybeth Reader ran 2:48:25 at the Chevron Houston Marathon and just missed making the Women's U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying time. This was a PR for Marybeth by 21 seconds. I had the privilege of running with her for most of the first half of the race and she was still on pace to make the trials through mile 23. She really ran a wonderful race. In the past 8 months she has run 3 marathons in an attempt to make the trials and come so close each time. They include the Bayshore Marathon (2:48:46), the Detroit Marathon (2:50:45) and Houston (2:48:25). I hope you will consider listing this performance in an upcoming e-mail. Marybeth is a great ambassador for Michigan running and a great inspiration to many of us."

2nd, F35-39), Marybeth Reader, 2:48:25, Chevron Houston Marathon, Jan. 13, 2008 (2:47:00 is the women's B qualifying standard).

1st) Michael Wardian, Team Pacers/ Brooks, 5:50:34, JFK 50 Miler, Saturday, November 17, 2007, second fastest winning time and his third try 2nd) Zachariah Miller, Ann Arbor, 6:02:02, JFK 50 MIler, Saturday, November 17, 2007

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED RECOGNIZES RYAN SHAY

ESPN introduced it's end-of-the-year review of athletes and people in the sports business who had died during the year, they began with a quote from Steve Prefontaine. The piece was long, well-done and mostly inclusive. Given the Prefonaine quote, I was sort-of expecting to see something about Ryan Shay. Alas, I was disappointed-- mad even. Thus, when I picked up the December 31, 2007 issue of Sports Illustrated, I was pleased to see Ryan Shay recognized in "The Year in Sports, 2007". The photo was of Shay during the World Cross Country meet in Mombasa, Kenya and he was given space equal to that of the Washington Redskins' Sean Taylor who was killed during a robbery at his home.

BEN ROSARIO'S RUNNING STORE IN MISSOURI IS DOING WELL

Big River Running Company in Manchester, Mo-- a Western suburb of St. Louis, is doing well according to Missouri Runner and Triathlete's Richele Collins.

Quote from Ben's account of the Olympic trials: "It was Brian who had put off dental school in search of his dream. For 2 years I was fortunate enough to run with him every day as a memb er of the Hansons Brooks Distance Project in Rochester Hills, MI. For those of us who know him and saw him train we knew that he would make this team. What we knew was that no one who stood on that starting line had trained harder than he had over the last 4 years. We knew that he would have a big day on Nov. 3 becaus that's what he does." -- From Inside the Olympic Trials, Missouri Runner and Triathlete, January/ February 2008.
