The 2008 Walt Disney Awards Marathon awards show featured many
prominent Michigan runners. Creigh Kelley does the podium honors
and Jennie McCafferty handles the microphone to capture interviews of
some of this year's winners. Those interviewed include Hanson Brooks
runners Yolanda Flamino (1:18:49) and Lori Stich Zimmerman
(1:20:22) who ran second and third in the half marathon and Lance
Jones who finished third in the marathon.

While Desiree Davila's Hansons-Brooks teammates were running in
Florida, they were keeping tabs on the Hansons-Brooks women running
in the 2008 USA Half Marathon Championship in Houston the same
day. Desiree Davila's huge PR earned her runner-up honors and
$6,500. Here is Runner's World online's Peter Gambaccini's "Brief Chat"
interview with Desiree Davila on January 25:

BUMPER RUN RESCHEDULED TO FEBRUARY 20

LEISURE TRENDS: RUNNING SPECIALTY A $600 MILLION MARKET
=======================================================
Running specialty stores chalked up nearly $600 million in retail sales
in the 12 months ending in December 2006, according to a survey
conducted among 453 U.S. running store companies who operate 713
individual storefronts. The survey, conducted by the Leisure Trends
Group in association with Formula 4 Media, is a first of its kind for the
specialty running shoe universe.
Footwear sales represent 61% of total sales in the channel and running
shoes 80% or $288 million. Apparel sales accounted for 19% of sales
and socks 6%.
Each region of the country showed sales growth with the West showing
the strongest increase in sales (14.3%) followed by the South Central
(13.9%).
Yield per square foot for total square footage was $363; for total retail
selling space, $522. The yields are among the highest for all retailers
that the Leisure Trends Group measures.
Sales for the first six months of 2007 are 12.4% ahead of the same
period in 2006, retailers reported.
The study includes brand data as well as information on futures orders,
sales people and types of marketing. The retail data are available to
stores that contribute data to the Leisure Trends Retail Track and to the
industry sponsors. For more information, contact: Neil Schwartz 561-
350-5502 or Julia Day 303-786-7900 x107.

LETSRUN.COM DISCOVERS STEVE SHERER
==================================
When Steve Sherer (Saline HS/ Michigan State) ran a mile in 3:56 on
February 4 at a University of Washington indoor meet, the message
boards lit up. Posters wondered "Who is this unknown runner?" Well,
he's not unknown to us, but we enjoyed Letsrun.com's Robert Johnson's
interview anyway. A link to the race video is included.

RUNNER INSPIRES GRAMMY NOMINATED SONG
=====================================
Delilah DiCrescenzo, a world-class steeplechaser from Chicago, has
been getting some unusual attention for her sport. She's the inspiration
for the Grammy-nominated song-of-the-year "Hey There Delilah", by the
Plain White T's. The song lost out to Amy Winehouse's Rehab, but
Delilah did get to go to the Grammy's. Grammy photo and story: http://

MITCA HONORS TONY MIFSUD
========================
Tony Mifsud, a 1967 EMU graduate and All-American in cross country,
was honored at the MITCA track and field clinic in Lansing with the
Charles Sweeney award. Former Eastern Michigan coach Bob Parks
has this to say about Sweeney and Mifsud:
"I know the late Sweeney, who was an outstanding coach at Lansing
Sexton HS. When I was in graduate school at MSU and coaching at
Dewitt, I used to take my team over to Sexton and we ran track meets in
the upstairs hall, going back and forth, turning around a waste basket at
each end. At least it kept the kids busy during the winter and developed
an interest in the sport. During much of the time Tony was at Eastern, he
worked 8 hours at Ford's and still trained hard and raced well. His sr.
year he quit the job and didn't run quite as well. I guess he didn't know
what to do with his free time. His son, Jeff, also ran for us [Eastern
Michigan], contributing a 1:49 relay split to the fastest 2mile relay team
in the country. His teammates were Paul Kerbey, John Griffiths, and
Mark Dailey. We beat a great field at N.Dame, including Villanova,
Arkansas, and Penn State."
