======================================================= ============= WANT A NEW ADVENTURE? HIKE THE GRAND CANYON IN ONE DAY WITH RON GUNN ======================================================= ============= Ron Gunn in known for getting folks fired up about running. Now he's getting folks fired up about hiking the Grand Canyon. September 28 through October 4, 2008 is Ron's fifth single day rim-to-rim hike of the Grand Canyon as part of Southwestern Michigan College's Extreme Sports program. Runners say training for the hike is different from and more challenging than training for a marathon. Eleven spots are still open for the Fall 2008 adventure. ======================================================= ==================== SPIRIT OF THE MARATHON ENCORE, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21 - GRAND RAPIDS SPECIAL ======================================================= ==================== Go see this movie. It's a good movie and it's cool to think that others in the audience are runners (and their friends). The aerial shots of the Chicago Marathon start are stunning. If you missed it the first time, here's another chance. Grand Rapids was the nation's second-largest grossing venue after Seattle, WA. (But we knew GR was a hotbet of running already.) Think Fifth Third River Bank Run.

Race organizers for the 2008 Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon will re-open a special booth at Celebration Cinema North starting at 6:00 the night of the movie with an encore offer of $5.00 off registration and free popcorn to those planning on running the October 19 West Michigan event.

WHAT: "Spirit of the Marathon" (120 min.) WHEN: February 21, 7:30 p.m.

For Michigan (and nearby) theaters see: http://www.michiganrunner.net/ news/spirit_movie0208.html

======================================================= ======== SNOW MONKEY SNOWSHOE RACE, TRAVERSE CITY, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23 ======================================================= ======== Running Fit hosts its second snow shoe race of the season on Saturday. Do one loop for a 2.5K or 2 loops for the 5K, 10:00 am, Twin Lakes Camp, 6800 N. Long Lake Rd. The Website's course description is absolutely tempting: "A new and improved start for the 2008 race! Nearly 300 yards are open and fairly flat this year allowing competitors to untangle and sort themselves. Then you get into the single track through hardwoods, up a hill around the bend and through a grove of pine trees. Along the edge of the field and wind down the trail along the lakeshore and back to the start. This 2.5k loop is beautiful and scenic, but also tough! Be prepared. 5k competitors will loop it twice, so it could be quicker the 2nd time through." http://runsnow.com/monkey/

===================================== BILLY MILLS INSPIRATION ESSAY CONTEST ===================================== USA Track & Field is holding an essay writing contest beginning February 1st and ending March 30th, 2008. Prizes are: A poster autographed by Billy Mills and official USATF merchandise. Both the winning essay and the author's photo will be posted on the USATF website. In addition, the winner will receive a USATF t-shirt, hat, and spike bag. The runner-up will receive a USATF hat. The winners will be announced online in May.

Any USATF youth member age eight to eighteen is encouraged to write an essay.

During the 2007 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships (in Lawrence, KS) Billy Mills spoke about his love for running. The 1964 gold-medal Olympian in the 10,000 meters discussed how his passion helped him overcome adversity to be a champion. In 1,000 words or less (typed or handwritten), please describe how Billy Mills has inspired your participation in track and field and/or cross country. Even if you were not at the championships, you may use his biography or your own research to write an answer. Please include your name, age, address, phone, e-mail address, and club affiliation (if applicable) in your submission. Essays will be scored more on content rather than grammar and punctuation.

Send completed essays (via mail, e-mail, or fax) to one of the addresses below by March 30, 2008.

===================================== RUNNING USA HONORS CRIM YOUTH PROGRAM ===================================== Running USA Youth Committee and YouthRunner.com named the Crim Youth Program the Youth Program of the Year at its annual conference in California earlier this month. "Having a full time Youth Program Coordinator since 1998 has enabled the Crim Festival to offer the Crim Kids Neighborhood Running Club, Teddy Bear Trot, Crim Kids Classic and the Crim School Mileage Club. During the 2007-08 school year to- date there are almost 50 Crim Mileage Club schools with approximately 8,000 participants. School assemblies featuring Running Bear and copies of Running Bear Book have been added to motivate students to begin running and walking. Over its 20 year history, the Crim School Mileage Club has involved over 100,000 elementary school students and in the near future programs will be offered at middle and high schools." http://www.runningusa.org http://crim.org/youth/

======================================== SARAH REINERTSEN - TOUGHER THAN THE REST ======================================== Once upon a time-- Janaury 1, 2000, to be exact-- we (husband Art, cousin Dennis) were celebrating the new millennium by running a marathon in New Zealand. I was inspired by, and unable to keep up with, the remarkable progress of one Sarah Reinertsen, who was running the marathon on a prosthetic left leg.

Fast forward to February 2008, when I open the cover of a glitzy "Golf Digest" to see a two-page ad featuring a photo of the same Sarah Reinertsen with her quote: "My parents always treated me like any other kid. And when I fell, my mom didn't always rush to pick me up. 'Sarah's going to pick herself up.' It was a really important lesson for me to learn. For me to keep up, I always had to be tougher than the rest. An I think that's still true today."

Oh, and there is a 2008 Lincoln MKZ in the ad, too.

===================================== HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY TORTOISE AND HARE ===================================== Tortoise and Hare Running and Fitness Centers in Ann Arbor are celebrating their 30th Anniversary with an Extracvangaza from March 2nd through March 8th.
