__/ ST. PATRICK'S PARADE CORKTOWN RACES, DETROIT, SUNDAY, MARCH 13 Doug Kurtis is excited about changes to the 23rd Annual St. Patrick's Parade Corktown Races. The four mile run and 1.5 mile walk starts at 12:30 pm at the traditional spot at the old Tiger Stadium, Michigan Avenue and Trumbull in Corktown. Finish is at the St. Patrick's Parade Viewing Stand nearby. The kids race begins at Noon. We spoke with Doug yesterday about a couple of the changes: chip timing, complete results, and a new route past Campus Martius Park and Comerica Park.

Among the highlights of the race are awards for the "Fastest Costumed Male and Female and Best Costumes Contest". The Fraternal Order of United Irishmen sponsors have been joined by Fifth Third Bank. The Downtown Runners and race director Rebecca Knox encourage runners to stay for the St. Patrick's Parade to follow the races. __/ BARBARA CLARK GILROY - 1964?-2005 John Hebert was the first to report this sad news: "I am sad to inform you of the untimely death of Barbara Gilroy (formerly Clark) on March 7. She evidently collapsed while running on Sunday. She was 41 years old and married to my friend Robin Gilroy. Among other accomplishments, she was the outright woman's winner at West Bloomfield Half Marathon last year and has been an exceptional runner in Michigan for a number of years. Her funeral is being held at People's Church in East Lansing this week (Thursday, March 10, 2:00 p.m. at Peoples Church, 200 W. Grand River Avenue, East Lansing)."

Barbara Clark Gilroy also won the West Bloomfield Half Marathon in 2003 and the 2002 Greater Lansing Playmakers Racing Series. __/ WEST BLOOMFIELD FLEET OF FOOT 5K AND ONE-MILE FAMILY WALKABOUT Yes, the West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation Department and the West Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce are hosting a spring race. The Fleet of Foot 5K is being sponsored by the Henry Ford Medical Center and will be on May 7 at 9:30 at the West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation Family Aquatic Center. __/ FIRST GENTLEMAN DANIEL G. MULHERN RUNNING MARTIAN HALF MARATHON "Northville, MI- The 5th annual Martian Marathon & Half Marathon will invade Hines Drive and surrounding communities on Saturday, March 19, 2005. More than 1,200 runners are expected to participate including First Gentleman Daniel G. Mulhern, honorary vice chair of the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports. __/ GAVIN THOMPSON TO REPRESENT GREAT BRITAIN AT WORLD CROSS Eastern Michigan distance coach John Goodridge alerted us to a good day for Eastern Michigan grad Gavin Thompson. Thompson won a bronze medal at the British XC Championships, the Reebok Intercounties cross country race in England last weekend, qualifying for the IAAAF World Cross Country Championships in France March 19 & 20. Thompson will represent England in the Senior Men's 12K "long" race.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - GAYLORD We checked in with Mike Tarbutton, Director of the Alpenfest Race in Gaylord. The Alpenfest is making a couple of interesting changes for the 29th running July XX: Championship Chip timing will be used for the first time for the 1 Mile, 5K and 12K. The 12 K replaces the old 7.5 mile distance. The route adds a loop, but is otherwise the same. Mike's proud of son Ben, one of the top runners for Lake Superior State University in his first year.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNERS HELP U.S. WIN AT NACAC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS The US fared well at the inaugural NACAC Cross Country Championships last weekend in Florida. Sabrina Monro, Hansons-Brooks, was overall winner of the Senior Women's 6K, Stephen Shay, Michigan State/Central Lake, placed fifth in Junior Men's 6K, and Josh Eberley, hansons-Brooks placed 6th in the Senior Men's 8K. __/ GREAT PERFORMANCES -- Lisa Veneziano, former Fenton resident and winner of the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon and many other Michigan races, now lives in West Chester, Ohio. Lisa can lift weights, too; she took first place in the Arnold Pump and Run, Columbus. 5K time: 18:30; 30 reps time: 3:30. -- Jamie Cope, Battle Creek, placed second. 5K time: 17:12, 30 reps: 2:12.
