__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES
-- Eastern Michigan Women's Track and Field Team, Champions, Oliver
Nikoloff
Invitational, Cincinnati, April 2. The Eagles scored seven firsts to finish
ahead of nine teams from Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Michigan.
-- Brian Sell, Hansons-Brooks, 23:17, 1st for the second year in a row,
Shamrock
Shuffle 8K, Chicago, April 3.
-- Clint Verran, Hansons-Brooks, 23:29, 3rd, Shamrock Shuffle 8K,
Chicago,
April 3. Deena Kastor obliterated the American 8K record in that race
with
her 24:36.
-- Monica Joyce, 17:07, 1st Master, Carlsbad 5000, April 3. Boaz
Cheboiywo
finished 5th and Dathan Ritzenhein finished 7th in the elite men's race.
-- Monica Scholz, New Jerseyville, Ontario, 29:22:29, 1st female, 2004
Badwater 135 Ultramarathon, July 12-14, 2004. Reader Larry Gooder
contacted
us about Monica: "Our local ultra running female, Monica Schulz, has
won
the Badwater 135 in 2004 along with other big name events and here in
Canada
she is lucky to get a one line mention in the sports pages, let alone
marketing exposure. I have joked with Monica that if she was an
American she
would be on a wheaties box. So the exposure Pam [Reed] gets through
her
interview on segments like 60 minutes will only help all the other
under-appreciated athletes."
__/ PASSPORTS REQUIRED FOR CANADA, MEXICO? WE HOPE NOT
The US State Department is proposing new rules that would require
passports
to enter the US-- for US citizens, Canadian citizens, Mexican citizens
and
all citizens of North America who don't need to present these for border
crossings now. The State Department says the new rules are subject to
comment.
Europeans don't need to present passports to cross European borders
and
neither do we North Americans. Michiganders and our Ontario
neighbors
cross the border to run, to ski, to play golf, to shop, to go to school, and
more. In the global economy, I think requiring passports ranks right up
there
with the worst of public policy. I'm sending comments to our elected
officials:
Senator Carl Levin (http://levin.senate.gov/contact/index.cfm),
Senator Debbie Stabenow (http://stabenow.senate.gov/email.htm),
Congressman John Dingell (http://www.house.gov/writerep/), and
Governor Jennifer Granholm,
(http://www.michigan.gov/gov/0,1607,7-168-21995-65331--,00.html).
For the proposed policy see the message from the US State
Department's
Office of the Spokesman: http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2005/
44228.htm.

of
between 5 and 10 km each. This marks the 19th edition of the annual
