Among the first timers are five women from the Hansons-Brooks Development Project running in their first Boston: Melissa White, Dot McMahan, Kelly Stewart, Yolando Flamino and Desiree Davila. __/ FIFTH THIRD RIVER BANK RUN TRAINING RUN, GRAND RAPIDS, SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 2007 - The 15K training run is a new addition to the Fifth Third River BAnk Run schedule. There will be clocks and aid stations along the part of the 25K course. Don't expect finishing times or awards, but you will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt and post-run refreshments. Banfield Foundation began in 2004 to "build an endowment to enrich the quality and support of female athletics ages K to 12th grade" in the Dexter area. The list of grants the foundation has made is impressive and includes basketball, volleyball, softball and pole vault. Bob and Katie Jazwinski. __/ USATF BANS HEADPHONES AND IPODS - For years, USATF has discouraged the use of headphones in running events. Now they are getting serious; you'll have to choose between the race and your ipod: "April 4, 2007 From press release. (Duluth, MN) USA Track & Field (USATF) recently adopted a new rule banning the use of headphones and other music devices at all USATF- sanctioned running events. USATF, the governing body for long- distance running and track & field in the United States, adopted the rule (#144.3b) in an effort to increase runner safety.

Previously, USATF guidelines recommended the prohibition of music devices for long-distance running events, but such a measure had not been mandatory until this year. Now, athletes participating in USATF- sanctioned races, such as Grandma's Marathon and the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, will be subject to the new rule.

Participants in Grandma's Marathon events are advised to not bring headphones or other music devices with them to the racecourse. Athletes with these devices will be given the option to surrender them to a race official prior to the race. Surrendered devices will be properly packaged and mailed back to their rightful owners within two weeks after the race. __/ CRIM / FLINT WIN "WALK! MAGAZINE" AWARD - "In its spring issue, Walk! Magazine has named Flint the "2007 Best City for Walkers" in the nation!! The same honor for "2007 Most Walker Friendly Event" has been awarded to the Crim Fitness Foundation for the annual Festival of Races and Crim Training Program.

The honors will be awarded by Cindi Leeman, editor of Walk! Magazine at a press conference downtown Flint on Tuesday, April 17th at 10:30 a.m. The event will take place at the University of Michigan-Flint Pavilion at the corner of Saginaw and Kearsley Streets by the familiar clock tower, gathering spot for Crim Tuesday night running and walking groups.
