__/ DETROIT ATHLETIC CLUB NAMES MARISSA TREECE 2007 MICHIGAN HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Detroit (5/14/07) - The Detroit Athletic Club (DAC), in keeping with its longstanding tradition of supporting athletics in the community, announced the winners of the 2007 Michigan High School and College Athlete of the Year Awards. These prestigious honors are awarded not only for athletic ability, but also for the academic and humanitarian efforts of high school and college student athletes.

The 2007 Michigan High School Athlete of the Year winners are Marissa Treece of Maple City, MI and Ryan Van Bergen of Whitehall, MI. The recipients of the second annual College Athlete of the Year are Drew Stanton, former MSU quarterback and second round draft pick of the Detroit Lions, and Becky Weima, swim star of Calvin College.

Marissa Treece is a senior at Glen Lake Community Schools and is a state champion and record holder in cross country and track. She is ranked second in her class and has received academic all-state honors in both sports. The 13-year 4-H member is also the school's national honor society secretary and maintains a 3.95 grade point average. Treece has committed to the University of Notre Dame and plans to study business management and marketing." -- DAC Press Release

Dan Jackson, a member of the Dexter High School cross country and track and field teams, was a finalist for the Detroit Athletic Club honor. Jackson is also headed to Notre Dame.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - DETROIT - We visited the new section of Detroit's River Walk recently and so did a lot of other people. The new Rivard Plaza with a carousel and waterfall is yet another reason to visit Detroit. We could envision a race there, and sure enough, so did the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. The Conservancy and the Neighborhood Service Organizationn (NSO) are sponsoring the first Detroit RiverRun & Walk 5K on September 8. (Contact: (313) 961-4890, ext. 1023; jhowse@nso.mi.org). Don't wait until September, though. For photos and more information on this spectacular new addition to Detroit see http://www.detroitriverfront.org.
