__/ PLANET FITNESS RUNNING FESTIVAL, SPRING ARBOR IS SATURDAY, JULY 21 - (*** not the earlier date as listed in a couple of issues of the Michigan Runner magazine.) The Planet Fitness Running Festival is part of the Jackson Citizen Patriot Running/Walking Series. Held on the campus of Spring Arbor University, the 10K and 5K courses are fast and certified. The 10K run begins at 8:15 am; the 5K run begins at 8:20 am; the 5K (non-judged) walk begins at 8:22; the Kids 1/2 mile fun run begins 15 9:15 am. Packet pickup and late registration are at the Spring Arbor University Fieldhouse. For details see: http://www.fitnesscouncil.org/runjackson/ planet_fitness_running_festival07.htm

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: ARTFUL DODGER IN ST. CLAIR - Addis Habetewold, Jerome Recker, and Jon Davidson mix it up at Artful Dodger Riverview Run in St Clair. Fast course, fast athletes and a fast downhill finish reward those who took that same hill up in the beginning. Still to come: St. Clair Art Fair, 5K Awards (every awards announcer could take a page from this rotarian's style) and a little from the YMCA/CHOK International Bridge Race. http://michiganrunner.tv/2007artful_dodger/

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER JULY / AUGUST 2007 ISSUE - One of the best reasons to subscribe or to get a copy of Michigan Runner magazine at your local running store is the great writing-- beginning with editor Scott Sullivan's "Editor's Notes. In addition, check out the great writing in the following: -- Robin Sarris Hallop - Beyond the Chip: Is 'Enough' Ever Enough? -- Scott Hubbard - Running Shorts -- Jeff Hollobaugh on Richard Chenault -- Scott Sullivan on Henry Rono and Hillsdale's WYLD Bill Lundberg -- Anthony Targan on his first Boston Marathon -- Laura McDonell on returning to marathon shape after son Nathan's arrival -- Daniel Kelsey's Notes on the Run: Flame Out -- Michael Heberling's Running with the 'Silent Killer' -- Mary Wolff-Longcore's Icarus on the Run -- Tom Henderson on Neal Shine. This issus also has lots of race coverage and great photos from Fifth Third River Bank Run, Hillsdale 'Gina' Relays, Dexter Ann Arbor Run and many more. __/ MICHIGAN APPLE RUN, SPARTA, SATURDAY, JULY 14 - The Michigan Apple Run has a lot going for it: fast times, a special rate for families, a free kids run, apple tree overall and age-group awards and a chance to watch or participate in the Michigan Apple Pie Eating Contest after the race. The race is held in conjunction with Sparta's Town and Country Fair Days, is the first of three races in the new Fruit Belt Series and is the Michigan Runner Race Series 5K. The 5K run and walk begin at 8:00 am; the kids' run begins at 8:40 am. Register online: http://applerun.org

__/ NATIONAL CHERRY FESTIVAL, TRAVERSE CITY, SATURDAY, JULY 14 - The Cherry Festival's 15K is one of a Michigan runner's rites of passage. Conquering Mount McKinley requires an uphill strategy as well as a plan for the dramatic downhill. The 5K generally turns out a really fast crowd. Cherries at the finish line, the Cherry Royale parade immediately after the race, Grand Traverse Bay, evening fireworks, Running Fit photos of everyone-- these are just some of the reasons you'll want to be there. Register online: http://cherryfestival.org/events/search_detail.php?event_id=158

__/ RED CARPET RUN 5K, NOVI, SUNDAY, JULY 15 - The Red Carpet Run Website is an unusual one (Joan Rivers looks 20 something; Justin Timberlake looks ready for his AARP card) and has this to say: "Make YOUR appearance on the Red Carpet July 15th, 2007! Nobody over 24 here, this is an event for the young and fabulous! We're bringing the glitz and glamour of the red carpet to the race circuit. Fully loaded with paparazzi, awards galore, and a fabulous after-party, this is a race you won't want to miss. Break out that prom dress and prepare your acceptance speech for the Red Carpet Run!" 5K begins at 10:30 am, Emagine Theater, Novi. Register online & check out the dress code: http://www.redcarpetrun.com

__/ WATERLOO TRIATHLON / DUATHLON, WATERLOO / GRASS LAKE, SUNDAY, JULY 15 - Portage Lake Beach in the Waterloo Recreation Area is the scene for the Waterloo Triathlon / Duathlon. The half mile swim is a clockwise loop in Portage Lake, 16 mile bike is a loop on rolling paved roads and the 5 mile run is on rolling hills, partly on trails. The duathlon's first run is a 2 mile on mixed roads and trails within the park. Entry fees include immediate post-race recovery food as well as a post-race lunch beginning at 10:15 through the awards ceremony. Race time Sunday is 8:00 am. There is no race-day registration. The Pan American Games are a multi-sport event, held every four years between competitors from all nations of the Americas.

-- MANDI ZEMBA, Menominee/ Grand Valley State University/ New Balance, earned her place on the team when she reached the finals in the 5,000 meter race at the USA Track & Field Championships. Hartmann joins NCAA Cross Country Champion Jorre Torres on the 10,000 meter roster. -- LINSEY GALLO, Freehold, NY/ Michigan/ Reebok - The All American from Michigan had a great college career in the middle distances. She's really come into her own since she turned pro. Gallo is competing in the 1500 meter run and could be on the medal stand if she has a good day. -- KEN FERGUSON, Mumford-Detroit/ South Carolina/ adidas - Ferguson earned three gold medals at the Pan Am Junior games in 2003. Ferguson's speciality, the 400 meter hurdles, is crowded with American talent and Ferguson could easily come home with gold. -- JAMIE NIETO, Sacramento/ Eastern Michigan/ Nike - The 2004 Olympic trials high jump champion, Nieto placed 4th in the Athens Olympic games. He's having another good year, winning the Nebraska Invite. -- SHEILA TAORMINA, Livonia/ Colorado Springs, Colo. Taormina already has a gold medal in swimming from the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. She was also on the US Olympic team in the triathlon in 2000 and 2004. Now she's trying a third sport, the modern pentathlon (shooting, fencing, swimming, horseback riding, running). __/ YOUTH TRACK CLUBS RECIEVE USATF FOUNDATION GRANTS - "INDIANAPOLIS (6/27/07) - The USA Track & Field Foundation awarded several Youth Club grants during its June Board meeting in Eugene, Oregon, USATF Foundation ExecutiveDirector Tom Jackovic announced Wednesday. Two Michigan clubs/organizations were awarded $1,500 grants: -- Ann Arbor Youth Track Club, Mich.: new uniforms, travel. -- Mt. Pleasant Track Club, S.C.: T-shirts, clinics, equipment. -- USATF press release. __/ MRN ON THE ROAD - FRANKENMUTH - It's hard to beat Frankenmuth's July 4 celebration. Lots of happy kids ran around Tuesday evening with light sticks, glowing wheels and other blinking things that are the sparklers of today. Light drizzle made for great running weather on the 4th itself. Race director Lucas Hart has been around the Volkslaufe literally since he was born. According to the Saginaw News, Lucas' dad, Bill Hart, directed the first several Volkslaufe races and his mom, Janette, was in charge of the finish line a week before Lucas was born. Congratulations to the Frankenmuth Jaycees for carrying on a great Michigan tradition.

__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - ROAD RACING -- Volkslaufe, Frankenmuth, July 4 - John Gault and his crew were alert for Doug Goodhue's attempt on the 65-69 American age-group record for the 20K (1:25:02, set by Paul Reese in 1987). Well, Doug succeeded in being faster with his 1:22:49, but fellow grand master Gerard Malaczynski beat him to it with a 1:21:46.

-- Peachtree Road Race, Atlanta, Georgia, July 4 - America's largest 10K served as the USATF Men's 10K Championship. Katie McGregor, 3rd, 32:39, $300 Desiree Davila, 12th, 34:12 Dot McMahan, 13th, 34:31

Boaz Cheboiywo, 4th, 28:25, $2,500 Brian Sell, 12th, 28:55, $400 + $400 Luke Humphrey, 28th, 30:09 Martin Rosendahl, 33th, 30:24 Clint Verran, 38th, 30:56
