__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - TRACK & FIELD
-- ALAN WEBB BREAKS AMERICAN MILE RECORD (IN CASE YOU HADN'T
HEARD)
"Three-time U.S. 1,500m champion Alan Webb on Saturday broke
the American record in the mile, clocking 3:46.91 at the
Atletiek Vlaanderenmeet in Brasschaa, Belgium. The mark breaks
the record of 3:47.69 set by National Track & Field Hall of
Famer Steve Scott in 1982 and makes Webb the eighth-fastest man
in history, behind Hicham El Guerrouj, Noah Ngeny, Noureddine
Morceli, Steve Cram, Daniel Komen, Venuste Niyongabo and Said
Aouita.

-- NACAC - North America, Central America and Caribbean
Athletic Association Championships, San Salvador, El Salvador,
July 13-15, 2007. Washtenaw County women ran 1-2 in the women's
100 meter hurdles:
1) Candice Davis, Pioneer/USC, 13.12
2) Tiffany Ofili, Ypsilanti/Michigan, 13.27
__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - TRIATHLON
-- Andy Potts, a member of the University of Michigan swimming
and track teams prior to his graduation in 2000 as well as a
2004 Olympian, took the gold medal in the triathlon (1:52:31)
at the Pan American Games, Rio de Janiero, Brazil, July 15,
2007.
__/ SHEILA TAORMINA AND THE MODERN PENTATHLON - Just what is
this Olympic event?
The modern pentathlon is five events: shooting, fencing,
swimming, riding, running. Points in the first four events
determine the staring time for the run. Whoever crossed the
finish line first wins the event.
Sheila Taormina finished 11th in the modern heptathlon at the
Pan American Games-- primarily because her horse refused seven
jumps. That wasn't nearly good enough to clinch a berth in
Beijing, although teammate Mickey Kelly of Chatham, N.Y.,
earned a spot by finishing third. Taormina will have four more
chances to make the Olympic team-- the first at the world
championships next month in Berlin, where a top three finish
would do the job. If Taormina does make the team she will make
history as the first person to compete in three different
Olympic sports (swimming, triathlon, modern pentathlon).

__/ GRAND RAPIDS MARATHON KIDS RUN - The Grand Rapids Marathon
is teaming with Gazelle Sports, Girls on the Run, Helen DeVos
Children's Hospital Foundation, David D. Hunting YMCA,
Alternatives in Motion and Metro Health to offer the first-ever
Kids Marathon in West Michigan. Kids can egister for free
online or through participating schools, businesses and
community organizations.
Beginning September 1, 2007, three times each week, kids 8-12
will run or walk one mile with a parent or family member. Kids
6-8 year old can split the mileage with a parent, older sibling
or grandparent. Kids younger than 6 can run or walk on the race
course-- in strollers or on foot. For details see

__/ SAUCONY AWARDS GRANT TO CRIM FOR YOUTH RUNNING PROGRAM -
Crim Fitness Foundation was awarded a Saucony Run for Good
Grant to Help Fund the "Feelin' Good Mileage Club" Youth
Running Program. The Saucony Run For Good Foundation gives kids
across the country a running start to a lifetime of good health
by awarding grants to community-based programs that support
youth-oriented running and fitness activities in the fight
against childhood obesity.
Lack of funding in Flint, Michigan did not allow for school
funded physical education classes in every local elementary
school building. In an effort to increase the activity levels
of local children, the Crim Fitness Foundation launched
the "Crim Feelin' Good Mileage Club", a school-based program,
in a select number of Flint elementary schools. The program
was created to promote healthy lifestyles and motivate students
to increase their physical activity by running and/or walking
during recess and lunchtime fitness breaks.
Children taking part in the "Feelin' Good Mileage Club" train
with local mentors and volunteers, learn about nutrition and
healthy food choices and track their progress. Many of the
participants will take part in the annual Crim Festival of
Races, a series of races that have been a Michigan tradition
for almost 30 years. http://www.sauconyrunforgood.com.
