__/ MID-AUGUST RACING CHALLENGES

-- THE LEGEND 5 & 10 MILE TRAIL RUN, LAINGSBURG, SATURDAY, AUGUST 11, 2007 - Looking for a race in the shade during these hot summer days? Try The Legend Trail Run in Sleepy Hollow State Park. After either the 5 mile or 10 mile run on grass trails, you can cool off in Lake Ovid or one of the other small lakes in the park. Races begin at 8:00 am. Web: http://www.runlegend.com/

-- RUN THRU HELL, PINCKNEY/HELL, SATURDAY, AUGUST 11, 2007 - Harrison Hensley has run somewhere around 2000 races, so he and his wife Dolores know exactly how to put on a race that runners will enjoy. The 10 mile and 4.8 mile races are on mostly shady dirt roads. Expect great competition, a collector's t-shirt, and age group awards going 6 deep. Get there early to avoid parking congestion. Race begins at 8:00 am, Hell Creek Ranch on Cedar Lake Road at Pattersone Lake Road. Register Online: http://gaultracemanagement.com

-- SYLVANIA SUPERKIDS TRIATHLON / DUATHLON, SYLVANIA, OHIO, AUGUST 11, 2007 - Some kids have trained; most kids just do what kids do: swim, bike and run. Kids and parents all have a blast at the triathlon or duathlon. Distances vary by age; events begin 7:30 am, Olander Park, Sylvania, Ohio. Web: http://eliteendeavors.com Video: http://michiganrunner.tv/2006eliteendeavors/superkidsqt.html

-- SYLVANIA TRIATHLON / DUATHLON, SYLVANIA, OHIO, AUGUST 12, 2007 - This event will bring out terrific competition this year as it serves as the USAT Mideast Tri/Du Championship. Triathlon has a choice of distances: tri 1.5MS/ 40KB / 10KR or sprint tri .25MS/ 13MB/ 3.1MR. Duathlon is 5KR/ 40KB/ 10KR. Events begin 7:30 am, Olander Park, Ohio. Web: http://eliteendeavors.com Video: http://michiganrunner.tv/2006eliteendeavors/sylvaniaqt.html

__/ SCOTIABANK TORONTO WATERFRONT MARATHON GOES LIVE ON CBC COUNTRY CANADA - "TORONTO, July 31, 2007 - Organizers today announced that the 2007 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon will be broadcast live on CBC Country Canada and on the internet at http://cbcsports.ca. The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon takes place on Sunday September 30, 2007 and is the first Canadian marathon ever to be covered live.

Canadian marathon celebrities like 76-year-old Ed Whitlock will attempt a new age-group world record, and competing for the Guinness Book of World Records is Toronto's own Michal "The Joggler" Kapral who will juggle and run while raising funds for Sick Kids Hospital." From a Scotaibank Toronto Waterfront Marathon press release.

__/ GARY MORGAN AND THE JUNIOR PAN AM GAMES IN SAO PAULO, BRAZIL- Gary Morgan, 1988 Olympian from Clarkston, puts as much time in volunteering for the running community as anybody. This July, USATF named Morgan a coach for the Pan Am Junior Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil. What does a coach do? Keep track of athletes, keep track of the athletes' events, and make sure athletes show up on time for their events. Coaching is not all work, though. Morgan's postcard from Sao Paulo mentioned the beach and its 8 ft. waves. If you are planning to walk a half marathon, you can benefit from Morgan's coaching; check out Morgan's training schedule on the Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Marathon site: http://www.detroitmarathon.com/training/training.html

__/ HAVE YOU RUN ALL CRIMS BUT ONE? - "As the clock ticks down to the 31st running of the Crim, we are looking for anyone who has run all Crims but one...we think there are a lot of folks out there who missed the very first race, or who have missed one race in the middle. Last year we honored the 30 Year Runners, and will continue to recognize their achievements.

However, if anyone has completed 30 Crims total - this year we are looking for you.

Please contact: Riley McLincha at magic11@juno.com or at 810- 397-2728." -- Deb Kiertzner, Race Director, Crim Festival of Races

__/ STEVE'S RUN A.K.A. ORIGINAL ROAD AND TRAIL RUN: ITS THE COURSE OF COURSE I have been covering this race for decades and have seen it move steadily into the pantheon of great Michigan road races. Obviously, longevity is an important consideration in all of this, as it finished its 33rd race in the past 35 years. However, the continued popularity of the race is also a result of the variety of course surfaces and race experience you have over the 10K distance.

The thousand plus starters also kick off the second day of the annual Dowagiac Fun Fest, a terrific event, where increasingly more runners hang out apres race. The Fun Fest offers music, dancers, fun rides. puppets, face painters, great pubs and some very nice Dowagiac people.

As runners head out of of town after the start, the booths begin to open at the Fun Fest and the streets begin to fill with people once again. The runners start in town, head for the softness and the shade of Elks Golf Course , pick up the pavement again as they cross the road and head up into the cemetery on their way to the trails for the 10K or back to town for the 5K finish line. The cemetery portion of the course, is lined with post'em notes writings such as; "In Memory of Grandpa Dean and Grandma Joanie", "Walk Faster Grandpa", "In Honor of Don Hall 10 Year Cancer Survivor" and "Love you Steve- Mom and Dad".

When the trails kick in so does the body meter on the quality of your fitness . The respite and serenity of SWM campus is welcomed, but before long you dash into the woods again. After, "the rest stop", where you can get a fresh drink a cool towel or a soaking by the fireman's shower, you think about the trek down to and aroung "Character Corner", knowing that the last part of your journey is in- town running and your ultimate splashdown at the finish line near Dowagiac Creek.

MR TV http://michiganrunner.tv will have one of the shows up next week.

Cheers and a collective "Fire Up" -- Art McCafferty __/ OFF TOPIC - TOUR DE FRANCE - Nine years ago we were in Europe for the Swiss Alpine Marathon when we realized we could change our itinerary just a bit and catch Le Tour de France. Off to Albertville we went. Towns where the individual stages finish host a huge festival. We got our spots, watched the riders on the jumbotrons, watched the hour-long parade preceding the riders, then watched the riders themselves (actually-- just the tips of their helmets) whiz by just before the stage finish line. As it happened, that was an historic day for Le Tour-- the day when the French police got serious about drugs and pulled riders out of the showers. The next day, the riders cruised rather than raced the entire stage 17. We still follow the Tour on TV as much for the countryside and mountain scenery as for the competition. That year, in 1998, Bobby Julich took third. This year, Julich is writing a column about the tour for ESPN. We like his writing, his insights and his attitude about the Tour and doping. Here's one: http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/tdf2007/news/story?id=2949068

__/ HARVEST STOMPEDE DATE IS SEPTEMBER 22, 2007 - Race director, Nate Rousse, contacted us about the correct date for the Leelanau Peninsula Vintner's Association's Harvest Stompede: Saturday, September 22, 2007. Everyone should do this event on a unique course at least once to find out why folks return again and again. Dan Kelsey says it best: http://www.michiganrunner.net/news/harvest_stompede0906.html. __/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - TRACK & FIELD "Relay" Fred Vanhala alerted us to this one: "Gerard Malczynski was first in the National Sr. Olympics 1500, 65-69 bracket, with a time of 5:09.10, beating a field of 21 other runners by 24 seconds. He was then 2nd in the 5K road race. " __/ FRONT LINE RACING TEAM HAS SPOT FOR CRYSTAL LAKE TEAM MARATHON - If you haven't tried the Crystal Lake Team Marathon Relay on August 11 yet, Front Line Racing Team may still have room for one person. "Relatively fast male or female runners may contact Fred Vanhala right away: Relayfred@aol.com
