-- CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES, FLINT, SATURDAY, AUGUST 25 - Former Michigan Speaker of the House, Bobby Crim, began this race 31 years ago. Over the years, the 10 Mile has attracted world class athletes and the 8K, 5K, 1Mile and Teddy Bear Trot races have contributed to a fitter Flint. The 10 Mile Run and Walk begin at the traditional corner of First and Saginaw Streets, 8:00 am. We'll have more in a special Crim Edition later this week. -- TAHQUA TRAIL RUN, PARADISE, SATURDAY, AUGUST 25 - Fans of Jeff Crumbaugh's long-distance trail races have new treat in store: the Tahqua Trail Run in, where else, Paradise, Michigan. The 25K run will take you from Whitefish Bay on Lake Supereior to the Upper Tahquamenon Falls. Events also include an 8K run and a 1 Mile kids run and begin at 8:00 am. Paradise is just south of Whitefish Point and east of Tahquamenon Falls State Park in the Upper Peninsula. Tahquamenon Falls themselves deserve a visit the UP. No race day registration. -- EASTPOINTE LIONS CLUB 5K RUN & 1 MILE FUN RUN, EASTPOINTE, SUNDAY, AUGUST 26 - The Eastpointe Lions Club moved this annual 5K run and 1 mile fun run to later in August than in previous years. Doug's nearest competitor was more than 3 minutes behind.

Doug himself wrote in that Ed Whitlock also won his age group (M75-79) 40:41.82. Ed's time also broke the meet record and was faster than the US record for that age group (43:39.4). Ed set the world record (39:25.16) for the age group in July 2006.

-- LELA NELSON COMPETES IN THORPE CUP FOR US; WINS HEPTATHLON - Lela Nelson (Detroit Mumford/ Eastern Michigan/ Nike) scored 6,022 points to lead the USA women's team at the 2007 Thorpe Cup. The Thorpe Cup is an annual multi-event match with Germany. Nelson won the high jump, the long jump and the individual title in the match, August 18-19, Bernhausen, Germany.

We put Pittsburgh on our list in May 2000 when the race served as the course for the U.S. Olympic Trials, Men's Marathon. We liked the course's rolling hills and the opportunity to visit the interesting and beautiful city of Pittsburgh-- especially PPG Place on a starry night. The race could be on May 4, 2008.

__/ CANDIDATE MIKE HUCKABEE TO RUN FALL MARATHON IN DES MOINES, IOWA - Sunday's New York Times had a piece about how presidential candidates were planning to spend their vacations this summer. Most combined campaigning with vacations, but we liked candidate Mike Huckabee's take on relaxing:

"Mr. Huckabee, who plans to compete in the Des Moines Marathon in October, is taking most of his relaxation an hour at a time.

"'His idea of downtime and relaxing is to run,' said spokeswoman Alice Stewart. 'That's something he gets accompllshed no matter how hectic his schedule is, which says something about his character and determination.'"

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD: IRELAND - A golfing trip took us to the Emerald Isle, but we enjoyed the chance to explore the seashore, the countryside, small towns, gardens and Killarney National Park on foot. One of the new developments we enjoyed: Ireland now permits no smoking anywhere inside, including those famous Irish pubs.
