__/ LABOR DAY WEEKEND RACES
-- MILFORD LABOR DAY 30K & 10K, SATURDAY, SEPT. 3
Nothing beats the 30K for a Fall marathon long training run and the
Milford Labor Day 30K fills the bill. The course is scenic, you get aid
stations and the company of other runners along the way. This year
Milford has added a 10K to the day's events. Prize money will be
awarded to top runners. The 30K begins at 8:00 am at Baker's of Milford
Restaurant, 2025 South Milford Road. The 10K Walk & Run begins at
8:45 am.
Online registration and more details are available at http://
www.laborday30k.com/
-- CADILLAC FESTIVAL OF RACES, MONDAY, SEPT. 5
The Cadillac Festival of Races is one of Michigan's oldest classic races.
Get a PR on the flat, fast, certified 10K course. A 5K run and walk was
added in recent years and events include a kids run. The Cadillac
Adventure Triathlon features a 2 mile kayak race as the water
component along with the 12 mile bike and 5K run legs of the race.
Events begin at 9:00 am at Cadillac Memorial Stadium. For more
information, call Rich Langton, (231) 775-0547.
--SECOND ANNUAL GOVERNOR'S LABOR DAY BRIDGE RUN
We have Governor Jennifer Granholm and her husband, First
Gentleman Dan Mulhern, runners both, to thank for putting this run on
the calendar. Michigan governors have long led the traditional walk
across the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day. Jennifer Granholm worked
with the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness Sports and Health to get
the run included. Entry by lottery closed earlier this summer. If you
missed the lottery this year, you can check out the Council's Web site for
lottery details: http://www.michiganfitness.org/bridgerun.html.
__/ JAZZ FEST RUN CANCELLED
Sadly, Doug Kurtis reports in today's Detroit Free Press:
"The Jazz Fest Run had the best awards ceremony of all the events I
work on, I don't know if it was the venue, the music or the beeer, but
people stayed for awards and cheered enthusiastically. Unfortunately, I
have to announce that this year's Jazz Fest Run has been cancelled.
Budget cuts and the Labor Day parades stretched police resources
making it too difficult to ensure a safe course,."
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: 2005 CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES
Michigan Runner TV will feature the 2005 Crim Festival of Races
beginning Thursday, September 1. We have interviews with Race
Director, Deb Kiertzner, and athletes
Paul Aufdemberge, Krysh Brish, Laurie Decker, Doug and Cindy
Goodhue, Boaz
Cheboiywo, Todd Snyder and more. http://michiganrunner.tv/2005crim/
__/ JIM FORSHEE ASKS RACE DIRECTORS FOR 80+ AGE GROUPS
Jim Forshee, one of the most accomplished senior runners in the US,
recently sent a plea to race directors by way of Michigan Runner:
"Dear Michigan Runner,
Runners eagerly anticipate birthdays, when it means they celebrate a
new age-group. Next March, I'll be blowing out 80 candles, but there will
be few races that will give me a new age-group. In most Michigan races
I will have to compete against men 10, or even 20 years, my junior.
"For years, I've trained hard and raced harder. I pay the same entry fee
everyone else does, but in most races I won' have a fair chance of
winning. While I realize that races have few runners over 70, those of us
who continue to race into our 70s and 80s deserve a fair playing field.
"For 32 years I've supported your races, and to all of you hao have 80+_
I thank you and support you. I'm sorry that I can't stop aging. I ure the rest
of you to consider celebrating aging with me, and add five-year age-
groups for all runners as high as you need to go."
-- Jim Forshee
__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - FLINT - CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES
-- It was good to talk to Kyle Baker, now that he has returned to
competition after many months out with injuries. Baker, who was unable
to compete in the Oympic Marathon trials, will be running the Twin Cities
marathon.
--We had a chance to meet the delightful Nina Rillstone from New
Zealand who was 5th overall in 56:06. Nina came to our rescue when
we tried to carry too much to the car in one trip.
-- Bobby Crim got our Michigan Runner of the Year awards off to a
surprising start Friday evening. The 73 year-old founder of the original
Crim Road Race hopped up on the stage and demonstrated the kind of
stretching more typical of a 14 year old gymnast. Boy is he limber. Crim
finished the 10 mile in 1:39:58-4th in his age group. Laurie Decker, Kyle
O'Brien, Betsy Frens, Suzanne Larsen, Doug Goodhue, and Patricia Ball
were on hand to receive their awards. We mailed awards to Carol
Bender and Brian Olsen who were unable to attend.

The Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon has been named the
fastest growing marathon in the USA - and there's good reason for that.
The secret is out of the bag that Detroit has perhaps the best course and
finish in all of marathoning.

volunteer and support those who will be running. Contact the marathon

__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES ON THE ROADS
-- Boaz Cheboiywo (49:39) and Betsy Frens (58:16 PR) were the top
Michigan and US residents to finish the Crim 10 Mile. Both Cheboiywo
and Frens now focus on their coaching seasons-Cheboiywo at
Concordia College and Frens at Kalamazoo Christian High School.
-- Paul Aufdemberge (52:51) was the first master (world, US and
Michigan) to cross the
Crim 10 Mile finish line.
__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES ON THE TRACK
-- Bernard Lagat on Sunday, August 28, achieved what most felt was
simply a matter of time: he broke Sydney Maree's American record in the
men's 1,500 meters. The 30-year-old Lagat ran 3:29.30 to win the 1,500
meters Sunday in Rieti, Italy, at the final IAAF Grand Prix meet of the
summer. His time breaks Maree's AR of 3:29.77, set in Cologne on
August 25, 1985, and is the fastest time in the world in 2005.
