__/ UPCOMING WEEKEND IS YEAR'S BUSIEST - Fall could very well be the best season for running in Michigan and the race calendar seems to reflect that idea. Whatever the reason, the first weekend after Labor Day has more races than any other weekend. Here are some of our favorites:

-- CLEVELAND CLINIC SPORTS HEALTH RIVER RUN, SATURDAY & SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8-9, 2007 - Cleveland's beautiful metro parks are the setting for the 5K run/walk on Saturday and the half-marathon run, relay and in-line skate on Sunday. All begin at Wallace Lake in Berea. The point-to-point half-marathon course is one of the most scenic anywhere as it follows the river valley to Lake Erie. -- DANCES WITH DIRT, PINCKNEY/HELL, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2007 - It's too late to sign up for the 100K relay, but you can help your chances for next year by volunteering and having fun in the process. You can still sign up for the 50K or the 50 Mile run. (Think about it; add just 8k to the ordinary marathon distance and you can brag about your first ultra. -- MACKINAC ISLAND 8 MILE ROAD RACE, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2007 - This is the 37th edition of the Michigan classic 8 miles around the island. If you've never done this race, you must put it on your list. If you have run or walked the 8 miles around Mackinac Island, you don't need convincing. Lake Huron is alway on your left, only the slightest of inclines interrupt the flat course and runners take over Mackinac Island for the weekend. Mission Point Resort is headquarters, but you can stay in Mackinac City or St. Ignace and take an early ferry for the 9:30 am start. -- WITCH'S HAT RUN, SOUTH LYON, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2007 - The 10K run and the 5K run/walk are hosted by the South Lyon High School cross country teams. In fact, many alumni return for the race and guarantee some spirited competition. Kids have a blast at their races on the high school track. All begin at 8:30 am, South Lyon High School.
