-- RUNNING FIT 20 MILE TRAINING RUN, WESTLAND, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 - Fall marathon season means long runs. How about a long training run on a traffic free road, aid stations every 2 miles, mile markers and the company of other runners.? The training run on Hines Drive can be any distance up to 20 miles. 8:00 am, Nankins Mills. http://www.runningfit.com/20_mile_training.cfm

-- BIG HOUSES / BIG HEART 5K, ANN ARBOR, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 - Imagine running through the tunnel to finish on the 50 yard line of Michigan Stadium "the Big House". While the Wolverines take on Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois, Running Fit is putting on a brand new, big-time 5K and 1 mile race. The unique 5K course makes a rare tour of the University of Michigan campus. Think a 5K is too short? You can run this amazing course and still get in your miles. Running Fit is adding a 5K or 10 mile "Run to the Start". 1 Mile Fun Run starts at 8:45 am; 5K starts at 9:00 am. Saturday's Expo is Noon - 6:00 pm in Crysler Arena. Web: http://bighousebigheart.com Video: http://michiganrunner.tv/2007bighousebigheart/

-- BOYNE 2 BOYNE MARATHON, BOYNE HIGHLANDS RESORT, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 - Northern Michigan is always a treat and the folks at Boyne USA have set up this new event with a terrific course along the shores of Little Traverse Bay, Bear River and Walloon Lake from Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs to Boyne Mountain Resort. In addition to the marathon, events include a half marathon, 10K, 5K and kids run. Boyne has terrific 2 day lodging packages for runners and kids will go wild at the Avalanche Bay Indoor Water Park. -- CAPITAL CITY RIVER RUN, LANSING, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 - One of our favorite courses has been extended this year from its earlier 10 mile to a *certified* half marathon. The new race is still centered on the River Trail, but the race has added a section through Michigan State University and a new section of trail through beautiful Scott Woods and Hawk Island Park. The half-marathon begins at 9:00 am and the 5K run/walk follows at 9:10 am. Saturday's events include kids runs (11am) an expo (10am-6pm), pasta dinner (5pm-6pm) and a presentation by Dick Beardsley (6:15pm). If you've never seen Dick Beardsley, you're in for a treat. Web: http://www.ccriverrun.org Video: http://michiganrunner.tv/2003capitalcity/

-- SCOTIABANK TORONTO WATERFRONT MARATHON, TORONTO, SEPTEMBER 30 - The fastest growing marathon in Canada is going big league with a live broadcast on CBC Country Canada and on the internet at cbcsports.ca. This is the first Canadian marathon ever to be covered live. In addition to great waterfront scenery, the marathon and half-marathon courses are flat and fast. Among the Michigan folks going for Boston qualifiers are Crim Fitness Foundation CEO Gerry Myers and drubbler Riley McLincha (sans basketballs this time). Races begin at 7:00 am. __/ HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS PARTICIPATION INCREASES AGAIN - "The number of student participants in high school athletics for the 2006-07 school year rose by 183,006 students to 7,342,910, according to the 2006-07 High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

In addition, girls participation exceeded three million for the first time, with 3,021,807 females participating in 2006-07. Boys participation of 4,321,103 is the highest participation in the past 29 years.

Basketball remained the most popular sport for girls with 456,967 participants, followed by outdoor track and field (444,181), volleyball (405,832), fast pitch softball (373,448), soccer (337,632), cross country (183,376), tennis (176,696), swimming and diving (143,639), competitive spirit squads (95,177) and golf (66,283).

In boys sports, 11-player football once again topped the list with 1,104,548 participants, followed by basketball (556,269), outdoor track and field (544,180), baseball (477,430), soccer (377,999), wrestling (257,246), cross country (216,085), golf (159,747), tennis (156,944) and swimming and diving (106,738).

The participation survey has been compiled since 1971 by the NFHS through numbers it receives from its member associations. The complete 2006-07 Participation Survey is available on the NFHS Web site http://www.nfhs.org. -- From NFHS press release

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD -- East Lansing - Nothing quite like watching thousands of high school runners showing heart to help their teams place higher. The most exciting runner to watch was Maverick Darling, who ran all by himself at the front to win the boys white race by over a minute. Curt Munson and Brian Jones from Playmakers called the plays at the exciting finish line. Spartan coach Walt Drenth and his crew kept things moving behind the scenes. Best part of the day was the sunny skies with fluffy white clouds-- not the promised rainly ones.

-- Sterling Heights - Hansons-Brooks Distance Project team gathered all thirteen guys who are headed to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Men's Marathon in New York City, November 3. Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, RunMichigan.com, Oakland Press and Michigan Runner were all there for the story. Richard Finn of New York Road Runners Club made the trip to Michigan to talk about the course. NYRR are hosting the race and raising its profile. Look for some exciting broadcast television coverage of the race. See John Niyo's article in today's Detroit News about Brian Sell: http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?
