__/ TSUNAMI TRAGEDY INTERVIEW

Morning runs are time to think and thoughts keep going to the overwhelming tragedy of the December 26 tsunami. We can't get our minds around the huge numbers of victims, but we can focus on one individual. For this reason, one radio interview I was fortunate to hear stands out among the stories. You can hear it online at http:// www.theworld.org/. Click on "Sri Lanka Eyewitness" (Dec. 30.)

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"I think that my future is road racing." -- Dathan Ritzenhein, quoted in the IAAF report on the Silvesterlauf 10km, December 31, 2004. http://www.iaaf.org/news/Kind=2/newsId= 28127.html

__/ MORE TOP ROAD RACING PERFORMANCES BY MICHIGAN RUNNERS

Last week I hit the "send" button and instantly thought of a few more Road Racing Performance that should have been included in the top 10:

-- Paul Aufdemberge, 2:20:03, Columbus Marathon, 2nd, October 17, 2004

-- Jim Carlton, 3:01:50, Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon, 1st in 60-64 age group.

Lew Kidder mentioned several of triathlete Sheila Taormina's running performances: -- 34:17, ITU World Triathlon Championship in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, 10K run, May 9, 2004 -- 16:05, local 5K near Orlando, July, 2004

Laurel Park sent these along:

-- Monica Joyce, 45 (race day), 1st female master, Carlsbad 5000, 17:08

-- Jim Forshee, 78, Tortoise & Hare Turkey Trot 5K, 25:40

-- Doug Goodhue, 62, Dex-AA 10K, 39:06 (new AG record)

-- Any of Denisa Costescu's races would probably qualify, but this one is particularly strong: Steamboat Classic 4 Mile, 5th overall, 21:27 Fred Vanhala (Relay Fred) keeps track of team and relay performances for the Front Line Racing Team. Here are just a few of the individual performances (excludes relays) Fred nominates by members of the Front Line Racing Team:

-- Paul Aufdemberge Crim 10 Mile 50:03 3rd in 35-39 bracket

-- Mike Scannell USATF Masters CC 6K 19:04 2nd Men's Master

-- Paul Aufdemberge UD Mercy Tommy Titan Invite 4 Mile XC 20:28, 2nd Place

-- Mike Scannell UD Mercy Tommy Titan Invite 4 Mile XC 20:43, 4th Place - 1st Master

-- Gerard Malacznski Chicago Marathon Marathon 3:03:27 1st in 60-64

-- Chris Glowacki Riverbank Run 25K 1:31:18 1st in 45-49

-- Laurie Decker Boston Marathon Marathon 3:13:08, 13th in Division

-- Laurie Decker Crim 10 Mile 67:06, 3rd Women's 40-44

-- Nancy Schubring Detroit Free Press Marathon 3:12:01, 3rd Master

-- Krys Brish Chicago Marathon 3:12:41, 10th in 40-44 bracket

-- Laurie Decker USATF Masters CC 6K 24:46 4th Women's Master

We'll continue the great performances story when Michigan Runner publishes the 2004 Best of Times list in the March/April 2005 issue.

__/ RITZ LAUNCHES PRO CAREER WITH 3RD IN ITALIAN ROAD RACE

Now we have another top road racing performance on the last day of 2004:

Dathan Ritzenhein made his professional debut in Europe-- not on the track, but in a famous 10K road race in Bolzano, Italy, December 31: the 30th Silvesterlauf 10km. Ritz's 28:24 was good for third, behind winner Sergiy Lebid, Ukraine, 28:23 and Olympic marathon champion, Stefano Baldini's second place 28:23. For the complete report see http://www.iaaf.org/news/Kind=2/ newsId=28127.html.
