__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: MARYBETH DILLON BUTLER INTERVIEWS RED SIMMONS - On Friday and Saturday, January 20-21, 2006, University of Michigan Track and Field hosts the Red Simmons Invitational, named for Coach Kenneth 'Red' Simmons, the Michigan coaching legend who formed the Michigammes women's track and field club in the 1960's. Coach Simmons then convinced Michigan Athletic Director Don Canham to allow women to compete for the University of Michigan. During the Michigammes February 2005 reunion at the home of Karen McKeachie and Lew Kidder, Marybeth Dillon Butler talks with Coach Simmons about his own track experiences and why he started the Michigammes in this two part interview. http://michiganrunner.tv/2006redsimmons/

Yasso has had more running adventures than most of us and he also invented the "Yasso 800" workout. The Club then puts on the Frozen Foot Race, Eastern Elementary School. The five mile race begins at 10:00 am. For details see http://www.tctrackclub.com/.

__/ JOHN "THE PENGUIN" BINGHAM, HOLLAND, THURSDAY, JANUARY 19 - The Holland Hospital Center for Good Health is sponsoring John "The Penguin" Bingham at the Park Theater in Holland, 7:00 pm, Thursday, January 19.

GREAT PERFORMANCES

__/ BRIAN SELL WINS USA HALF MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS - "HOUSTON - Pre-race favorite Brian Sell of Rochester Hills, Mich., won the second U.S. title of his careerat the USA Men's Half Marathon Championship in Houston, Texas on Sunday. The championship, hosted by the Aramco Houston Half Marathon also featured open athletes with Nicodemus Malakwen of Kenya taking the overall win in a course record 1:02:07. Sell ran a personal best 1:02:39 for second overall, just missing the championship record of 1:02:32 set by Paul Cummings in 1987. Jason Hartmann finished in second, 1:03:07. Sell and his Hansons-Brooks Distance Project teammates Luke Humphrey, Chad Johnson, Clint Verran and Kyle O'Brien won the team title, placing five athletes in the top-thirty."

-- USATF News Release.

__/ TOMMY GREENLESS QUALIFIES FOR OLYMPIC TRIALS IN DEBUT MARATHON

Nick Stanko, Michigan Runner of the Year, alerted us to Tommy Greenless's spectacular debut marathon. At P.F. Chang's Rock n' Roll Marathon, Greenless placed 7th, second American, with a time of 2:21:14. He won $1400 and qualified for the US Olympic Marathon Trials.

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"I felt like I played in a very rough football game with no hitting above the waist."

-- Alan Page on running his first marathon in 1979. Page is a Minnesota Supreme Court Justice, member of Minnesota Vikings Purple People Eaters, the NFL Hall of Fame and the first active NFL player to run a marathon.

__/ MRN AT HOME - YPSILANTI We attended two extraordinary events at home this week-- the first being Eastern Michigan Men's Cross Country Banquet on Friday evening; the second was Alan Page's Martin Luther King Day Keynote at Eastern Michigan's Pease Auditorium.

Many in the crowd for Eastern Michigan's cross country team banquet Friday night were there to honor Tony Mifsud, who was named 2005 Eastern Michigan Man. Coach John Goodridge did a masterful job of recognizing both current cross country athletes and alumni. Among those attending were a who's who of Michigan running: Boaz Cheboiywo, Aaron Bartee, Gavin Thompson, Jordan Desiletes, Steve Crane, Fred Vanhala, Ron Buchanan, Ed Kozloff, Lindsey Gallo, Harry Lindbach, Landon Peacock, Scott Hubbard, Gary Morgan, Mark Scoles, Karen Blackford and many more.

Alan Page, the man with the world's most interesting resume, delivered the Martin Luther King Day keynote address. Page was the first National Football League defensive player to be Most Valuable Player and the first active NFL player to run a marathon. Page is currently a justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Justice Page has worked to improve access to education and one of the anecdotes he mentioned brought home the need: a new assistant coach asked nine defensive Viking linemen to read the NFL playbook. Although the "big words" in that playbook were "offense" and "defense", five of the nine players could not read the book.

__/ CORRECTION: DEBBIE LAZAROFF WAS FIRST IN AGE GROUP OF 376 - I made a mistake in last week's report about Debbie Lazaroff. She finished first among the 376 people in her age group at the Disney Marathon-- not 66 as reported. Debbie said about her race, "It sure was a magical day and a very special moment for me. It sure feels good when you set a goal and can accomplish it!"
