Portage Central Head Coach and the Western Michigan University
Running Club are leading the effort to reinstate men's track and field
at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. The University's Board of
Trustees voted to eliminate men's track and field and cross country in a
budget-cutting move. Activities and events to "save our sport" abound: * The Western Michigan University Running Club is sponsoring a "Save
Our Sport" forum, February 7, 208 Bernhard Center, 7:00 p.m. to discuss
the athletic cuts and what individuals can do to help. * On February 5, runners will hold a "Save Our Sports" rally at 5:00 pm,
at the Flagpoles. Beginning at 4:00 pm that day and continuing until
7:00, supporters of the "Save Our Sports" campaign will run around the
campus. * The Western Michigan University Running Club is collecting
signatures on a petition drive in support of the Men's Cross Country and
Track and Field programs. * The campaign has an email list to update supporters on additional

__/ DETROIT'S MAYOR TACKLES "FATTEST CITY" DESIGNATION;
WILL RUN 2004 DETROIT FREE PRESS/FLAGSTAR
BANK MARATHON - Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick may not have a
runner's build, but he has significant athletic credentials; he was a
lineman and the captain of the Florida A & M football team during
his college years in Tallahassee. Pat Ball, Executive Director of the
Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon, tells us that Kilpatrick plans
to run the marathon in October. He finished the Compuware 5K Fun Run
on marathon day in 2002; then ran 10 miles of the marathon in October
2003. Men's Health magazine rated Detroit the #1 fattest city on January 2,
2004. The magazine looked at the 50 largest cities in 14 categories,
such as air quality, climate, commute time, total number of fast-food and
pizza restaurants, and number of health clubs and sporting goods
stores. __/ MICHIGAN INDOOR TRACK SERIES IS UNDERWAY - Michigan
hIgh school track and field competitors organize by clubs to compete in
the statewide Michgian Indoor Track Series (MITS). Events are held
weekday evenings and weekends at Colleges and Universities from
Lake Superior State In Sault Ste. Marie to Ferris State in Big Rapids to
Macomb Community College in Warren. January and February
events serve as qualifying events for the finals on March 6 at the
University of Michigan Indoor track. For the schedule and results see

In 1985 she set American 5-mile, 8K and 30K records. During the same
year, she won the Boston Marathon and Cherry Blossom 10-miler, and
was second at the Crim 10-miler. Lisa is also known for her three fourth-place finishes in U.S. Olympic
Marathon Trials. In 1986, her 5K (16:40), 10K (33:07), 15K (50:51), 10-
mile (54:46) and marathon (2:35:19) were the fastest by any woman in
