__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"I do a lot of running."
-- Craig Monroe, Detroit Tigers outfielder, responding to the question,
"How do you stay in shape during the off-season?" Tiger Caravan,
Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center, January 18, 2007.
__/ WINTER RUNNING EVENTS ARE ALL ABOUT FUN
-- BIGFOOT BOOGIE SNOWSHOE RACE, Traverse City, Saturday,
January 27 - No snowshoes? No problem. Snowshoes are available for
beginners (and even those who've never tried) for either the 5K or 10K
snowshoe race.
Meanwhile, the experts will be racing for a chance to compete in the
U.S. National Snowshoe Championships. Events begin at 9:00 am,
Timber Ridge Campground.
http://runsnow.com
-- SUPER BOWL 5K, Novi, Sunday, February 4, 2007 - The tradition of
Super Bowl runs started way back in 1982 when Pontiac hosted Super
Bowl XVI and the Motor City Striders hosted the NFL Alumni Winterfest
Run in frostbite weather in the days before global warming. Running Fit
resumed the tradition in 2006 when Detroit hosted Super Bowl XL.
Before you hit the couch, join runners in this fun 5K around scenic Novi
neighborhoods. The run begins at Novi Running Fit, 9:00 am.
Web: http://www.runsuperbowl.com
Video: http://michiganrunner.tv/2006superbowl/
-- SUPER BOWL 5K, Okemos, Sunday, February 4, 2007 - We
welcomed this event to the rather sparse Winter running calendar when
Chuck Block started this 5K several years ago. The 5K begins at 9:00
am, Playmakers, 2299 West Grand River in Okemos. After the race you
can check out Playmakers' terrific selection of winter gear. Proceeds go
to Michigan Running Foundation scholarships. Register online or find a
printable entry form: http://www.runningfoundation.com/.
-- BUMPER RUN, Shelby Township, Wednesday, February 7, 2007 -
Don Richmond celebrates the anniversary of his encounter with a truck
by hosting this free race in Stony Creek Metro Park. The course begins
at the Boat Launch at 6:15 pm and is approximately 6 miles. Imagine a
bracing run under a full moon around a lake and you'll want to join the
regulars at the Bumper Run.
-- Ypsilanti - We had blast when several of the American League
Chamption Detroit Tigers stopped by Eastern Michigan Convocation
Center last week. Craig Monroe, Chris Shelton, Placido Polanco,
American League Rookie of the Year Justin Verlander, third-base coach
Gene Lamont and Manager Jim Leyland talked about their magical
season, answered questions from a large gathering of fans and
graciously posed for photos with kids of all ages.
-- Detroit - We stopped by the Detroit Free Press offices to see
marathon director Pat Ball and PR director Anne Kelly as they gear up
for the 30th anniversary celebration. Whether you are a Detroit
marathon veteran or have yet to notch Detroit on your belt, 2007 is the
year to "do Detroit." In the last couple of years Detroit has hosted the
Ryder Cup, the All Star Game, NCAA basketball, and the Super Bowl
and has much to offer visitors and locals. We enjoy the newly accessible
waterfront, great Greektown restaurants, exhibits at the Detroit Science
Center, Detroit Institute of Arts, Charles H. Wright Museum of African
American History. On a recent visit to the Detroit Historical Museum on
Woodward, we saw Mary Wilson's collection of gowns from her days in
the Supremes-- better than the costumes on the movie Dreamgirls.
Check out one of our fun-filled weekends: 24 hours in Detroit:

-- Flint - We visited the Crim Office, the Flint Journal, the Sloan
Museum, and the Complete Runner earlier today. If you don't yet have a
copy of the Flint Journal's book of Crim photography "Long Blue Line;
the Crim at 30," a few are still available. The photography captures the
spirit of the Crim's runners, volunteers and personalities. Think
Valentine's Day present or a wonderful gift to inspire any runner you
know.
http://www.flintjournal.com/crimbook/
Race director Deb Kiertzner and the Crim team are making plans for the
31st Crim on August 25. In the meantime look for a new Crim Web Store
which will launch in mid-February. The store will offer year-round
access to Crim merchandise.
Jesse Griffith and the folks at Complete Runner were so excited about a
new cold-weather fabric that I had to try it. Mizuno's breath-thermo
fabric absorbs moisture and actually turns that moisture into heat. They
had shirts, hats, pants and gloves. After trying the gloves for about
four miles this afternoon, I can say they really did work: hands stayed
warm and dry.
Finally, I can't believe I've been to Flint year after year and missed
the absolutely wonderful Sloan Museum. The museum features regional
history, historic automobiles, hands-on science and a gift shop with a
great collection of classic toys. A special exhibit, "Tech City" opens
January 27 should be worth an extra visit. The Sloan Museum is located
in Flint's Cultural Center.

__/ CRIM OPENS ONLINE REGISTRATION - "The Crim is gearing up for
another big year in 2007, as on-line registration is opened for the 31st
running of the rim Festival of Races. Excitement from the 30th running is
still in the air as race organizers officially opened registration at
http://www.crim.org, official site of the Crim Fitness Foundation on
January 16th. This is the earliest on-line registration has been
available for the annual event, which shattered all attendance records in
2006." http://crim.org
