__/ FREE ENTRY INTO BUMPER RUN, FEBRUARY 9
Don Richmond commemorates surviving a run-in with a truck by hosting
the free Bumper Run, at Stoney Creek Metro Park on a Wednesday
evening.
The 10K (approximately) run begins at 6:15 pm at the Stony Creek
MetroPark boathouse, Washington, MI, North of Utica, @ 26mi & Shelby
Rd. There is something magical about a winter evening run and the
competition can be tough. You can read Don's account of his
experience at http://michiganrunner.com/feb01/miracle.html.
__/ TOP 10 SAFETY GUIDELINES
Don Richmond's experience reminds us to be mindful of safety. Here
are some guidelines to be safe while running on the roads:
1. Run as if you are invisible.
2. Be alert.
3. Run on park paths if at all possible.
4. Run facing the traffic.
5. Know your escape route if a car heads your way
6. Save headphones for the treadmill.
7. Wear reflective gear or clothing in the dark and in low light.
8. Wear bright clothing during the day, especially in the woods.
9. Avoid the woods during hunting season and don't wear white
gloves if you are in the woods during deer hunting season.
10. Run defensively.

MARATHON, FEB. 13
Clint Verran, Hansons Brooks, 5th at last year's Olympic Marathon
Trials and 3rd at the 2003 USATF Marathon Championship, is
accumulating his own share of sub 2:20 marathons at New York,
Chicago and Boston. Clint's next marathon will be on the fast course in
Austin, Texas at the Freescale Austin Marathon, February 13. Verran's
Hansons Brooks teammates, Kyle O'Brien, Jacob Frey, Brian Sell, Leigh
Daniel, and Jackie Rzepecki are heading to Austin this weekend for the
Austin 3M Half Marathon.
__/ RITE AID CLEVELAND MARATHON ADDS HALF MARATHON
CLEVELAND, (January 24, 2005) The Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon &
10K, one of the longest running marathon races in the country has
announced the addition of a half-marathon to the 2005 race day
schedule. In addition, the 28th annual event is opening both the
marathon and half-marathon to walkers by creating separate walking
divisions.
"With the number of runners rising nationwide and the increased
emphasis on daily exercise for everyone, we believe it is important to
offer both veteran runners and those new to the sport a variety of events
to choose from depending upon their conditioning, said Jack Staph,
Executive Director of the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon & 10K."

__/ FIVE THOUSAND METERS: NOTHING COMES EASY RELEASED
ON DVD
If you missed the theater showings of "Five Thousand Meters" Nothing
Comes Easy", the DVD has been released and you can order it online
from Negative Split Pictures. The movie features nine runners trying to
make the U.S. Olympic team in the 5,000 meter event, including Dathan
Ritzenhein, Tim Broe and Mark Menefee. We chuckled at some of the
bonus features including "The Tim and Ron Show", and Kevin Hanson's
discussion of entrepreneurs and pet rocks. http://

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD
--SHANTY CREEK
Shanty Creek's elegant and cozy Cedar Lodge were our hosts on a
bright winter night and morning where we hiked snow-packed roads.
Shanty Creek actually has maps for runners in the guest information
book, complete with routes and mileage. The book also includes a
mountain biking map.
--TRAVERSE CITY / PARK PLACE HOTEL / FROZEN FOOT RACE
Bill Rodgers drew a standing-room-only crowd in Traverse City last
Friday night. The Traverse City Track Club hosted Rodgers as the ninth
in their series of running legends. The next day, Rodgers participated in
the five mile Frozen Foot Race. I looked for Rodgers at the starting
line, gave up, then found him lining up at the back of the pack. Rodgers
talk was fun, full of anecdotes and hints. The gracious and humble
Rodgers answered questions, signed autographs and generally
charmed an audience tuned into Rodgers' running jokes and stories.
Michigan Runner TV will feature our interview with Rodgers later on
this month. Photos and Frozen Foot Race results are online at

__/ GOOD FOOD WE'VE FOUND ON THE ROAD THIS WINTER
-- Cadillac - Hermann's on the main drag (Mitchell Street) is a
three-star restaurant which has a deli, cafe, bar and hotel. We stopped
for mid-afternoon coffee and cranberry scone and drooled over other
pastries made by the certified Austrian pastry chef.
-- Bellaire - Short's Brewing Company opened nine months ago. We
couldn't have had a better lunch of blue-cheese chili and their winter
ale. My husband raved about the chicken wings and the pilsner. Live
bands play Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and walls serve as
an art gallery.
-- Traverse City - Minerva's at the Park Place Hotel. We continued
our chili theme during the 11th annual Chili Cook Off at the Park Place
Hotel. Folks try eight different chili's and vote for their favorites.
Minerva's white chicken chili has won more times than any other.
Nothing beats good chili on a cold winter day.
