__/ MELISSA WHITE 2ND OVERALL AS HANSON/BROOKS WOMEN SWEEP DISNEY HALF

- In her first major race since her marathon debut in October at the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, Melissa White led her Hanson/Brooks Distance Project teammates to a sweep of the first five places in the Walt Disney World Half Marathon, Saturday, January 6, 2007. Melissa also finished second overall in the field of 16,000.

3 - Desiree Davila, 1:18:55, 6th overall

4 - Kelly Stewart, 1:20:25, 11th overall

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD

- Lakeland, Florida - We stopped by the Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida to see the Detroit Tigers spring training home. The stadium was open; we could try out seats just a few feet from the infield baselines and we even tried out a seat in the dugout.

While there we talked to the one other person who was also paying a visit, Mike Barton, the baseball coach at Monroe, Michigan's Jefferson High School. We mentioned that Bekah Smeltzer from Monroe/ Jefferson, is one of Michigan's best high school runners. Turns out Bekah is dating Coach Barton's son. Small world.

- Lake Buena Vista, Florida - The record-breaking weather in the high 80's was nice for media and spectators at the Walt Disney Marathon, but tough for the marathoners. Nevertheless, several Michigan athletes did quite well in the field of 16,000. Sean Moore of Saline finished 4th overall and Lance Jones of Detroit finished 6th. Anne Baird of Stockbridge was the first Michigan finisher and Deborah Lazaroff continued her streak of all 14 Disney marathon sand finished sixth in her age group.

__/ CATHERINE NDEREBA WILL MAKE CANADIAN DEBUT AT OTTAWA'S MDS NORDION 10K

- January 10th, 2007 - OTTAWA, ON - Catherine Ndereba of Kenya, currently one of the best female marathoners in the world, will make her first ever Canadian race appearance at the 2007 MDS Nordion 10K where she will challenge 2006 champion Tatyana Hladyr of the Ukraine. It should be an interesting competition as Ndereba and Hladyr last faced off at the ING New York City Marathon in November, when Hladyr's time of 2:26:05 edged out Ndereba (2:26:58) for second place. Interest from athletes of Ndereba's calibre has been attributed to a new feature being introduced for the 2007 MDS Nordion 10K. For the first time in the event's history, the women will square off against the men in the race to the finish. The women will start the race a few minutes before the men - the time will be determined one week prior to the event - and the first runner to cross the finish line, man or woman, will receive a $5,000 (US) bonus in addition to the regular prize money. __/ BRIAN SELL TO DEFEND HALF MARATHON TITLE IN HOUSTON - INDIANAPOLIS

- (January 9, 2007) - Defending USA Half-Marathon champions Brian Sell, 28, (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Annie Bersagel, 23, (Minneapolis, Minn.), along with two-time U.S. Olympians Meb Keflezighi (San Diego, Calif.) and Elva Dryer (Gunnison, Colo.) headline the field for the 2007 USA Half-Marathon Championships this Sunday, January 14 in Houston. The national championship, hosted by the Aramco Houston Half-Marathon, is the first race of the 2007 USA Running Circuit (USARC).

The U.S. record holder and 2006 USA champion at 20K Ryan Hall (Big Bear Lake, Calif.) joins Sell and Keflezighi in the hunt for the first U.S. road championship of the new year.

A field of more than 40 of the top U.S. men will include two-time USA half-marathon champions Dan Browne (2001 and 2005) and Ryan Shay (2003-04) as well as returning top-five finishers from 2006. The USA Championship will feature a total prize purse of $59,500 with $12,000 for the respective men's and women's national champions.
