__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"I'm feeling relieved now, very happy, very happy. Cramping in the last
kilometer, was getting a bit bad, but I managed to survive. I planned
to run at 4 minutes 10 seconds a kilometer [6:42 per mile]. I ran pretty
close to that, I guess, and maybe a few faster ones around about 25-30K
and it got me a bit faster in the end, I guess."
-- Ed Whitlock, age 73, minutes after finishing the Scotiabank Toronto
Waterfront Marathon in 2:54:49, to break his own age-group world
record.
__/ RED OCTOBER RUN, WAYNE, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2
The 14th annual Red October Run is Saturday, October 2nd at
Oakwood Annapolis Hospital in Wayne, corner of Annapolis and
Venoy, 1/2 mile south of Michigan Avenue. This popular Michigan Fall
classic includes a 10k run, 5k run, 5k walk and Kid's junior mile. The
kids race is at 9:00 am, 10K is 9:50 am, and 5K is at 10:00 am. Colorful,
long-sleeved shirts, post-race prizes and great post-race refreshments
are among the benefits for participants. Proceeds will benefit community
outreach programs throughout the western Wayne region. For more
information and a printable registration form see
http://www.oakwood.org/documents/ROR_2004.pdf.
__/ RUNNING NETWORK TV: SCOTIABANK TORONTO WATERFRONT
MARATHON
Check out the scenery along the flat, fast marathon course and
Toronto's reclaimed waterfront. Our cameras also visit the Expo,
Saturday's Friendship Run and Running Room founder, John Stanton.
We'll have further coverage of the Half-Marathon, the 5K with John "The
Penguin" Bingham, and the record-setting runs of Ed Whitlock, Fauja
Singh and Michel Kapral.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD, TORONTO
We absolutely enjoyed covering the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront
Marathon last weekend. Race Director Alan Brookes and Media
Coordinator Inge Johnson were wonderful hosts and know how to put
on a really fun event.
The Canadians had a chance to experience the Hanson-Brooks team
coming to race. The Hanson-Brooks women swept the first three places
in the half-marathon. (See "Great Performances".) We also saw Joanie
Rogucki finish the half-marathon; Joanie's husband, Bill Hill, ran the
marathon.
It was a thrill to see twenty-somethings try to keep up with 73
year-old Ed Whitlock and to talk with him after his age-group world
record. Running Network TV will have more of Ed's run later on today.
__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES

Scott Hubbard, for alerting us to these Quad Cities results.)
__/ MORE FAST WEHRMAN'S
We were happy to hear from David Mitchell in response to last week's
item about Chris Wehrman:
"Chris was the first of 4 Wehrman brothers that I had the pleasure of
coaching at Pinckney H.S. All 4 earned their Eagle Scout honors as
well---an incredible accomplishment in itself. Chris ran at Michigan
State (and for a while with Hansons), Matt ran at Eastern Michigan; Pat
ran at Lansing Community College then Ferris St.; and youngest
brother Mark did what none of the others could do in h.s. by helping
his team to a 6th place DI finish last fall (for Coach Tom Carney). Mark
has graduated and will likely try to walk on to a college team next
fall. Dad, Dave Wehrman, has been a runner for many years and was
told by his doctors after being diagnosed with heart problems that
running saved his life. Mom, Martha, has fed hundreds of Pinckney and
collegiate runners (and coaches!) over the years at the family home
near Portage Lake and other locations."
__/ 10TH ANNIVERSARY TORONTO MARATHON, OCTOBER 17
For some it's a hobby, for others an obsession. For everyone, it is a
challenge! Over 10,000 runners from 33 countries are expected to
participate in the 10th Anniversary Toronto Marathon, Half-marathon, 5K
and Corporate Challenge. Top male and female runners will compete
for the largest marathon prize purse in Canada--over $100,000.
Another first on this anniversary year is a National Broadcast of the
Toronto Marathon on CBC Television on October 23. Michigan Runner
TV will be there to provide Internet coverage.
The course featues Yonge Street, the natural splendour of the Rosedale
Valley Ravine, and architectural landmarks like the Don Jail, the
Canadian Opera Company Building and Queen's Park.
Saturday's Pasta Dinner will feature Running Room Founder John
Stanton, and Runner's World's Bart Yasso. For details, see
http://www.torontomarathon.com
__/ FOX CITIES MARATHON RESULTS
The 14th Annual Fox Cities Marathon, Wheelchair, Michelob Ultra
Marathon Relay, U.S. Cellular Half Marathon and Appleton Power walk
drew over three thousand participants, with over 40 Michigan athletes in
attendance.
In the marathon Vince Temu 2:28:34 took top honors, with Wioletta
Kryza winning in 2:46:40. The Half Marathon, which attracted over 1400
runners, was won by Mark Manz in 1:08 :47
With the new ferry service now available from Muskegon to Milwaukee,
this race can be a terrific vacation as well as another marathon or half
marathon to launch on runners' belts.
