PARDON THE INTERRUPTION PARDON THE INTERRUPTION PARDON THE INTERRUPTION

GLSP currently has five of its web sites down: http://michiganrunner.tv http://michigangolfer.tv http://michiganskier.tv http://michiganrunner.com

According to our ISP (Internet Service Provider) three drives failed on one of its RAID arrays. Okay, I do not know what that means either. What I do know, is that the service will be up later this week. We are obviously, sorry for the interruption.

Art McCafferty, Publisher/Producer GLSP

PARDON THE INTERRUPTION PARDON THE INTERRUPTION PARDON THE INTERRUPTION

================================================================ ===== QUOTE OF THE WEEK ================================================================ ===== "You don't understand. It's not whether you get there. It's the journey." -- 4 X Olympian Al Oerter, competing at the 1980 Olympic Trials at age 43, quoted by Frank Litsky, New York Times, Oct. 2, 2007. Oerter died October 1 at age 71.

================================================================ ===== WHAT A DAY FOR DISTANCE RUNNING RECORDS ================================================================ ===== September 30, 2007 was an amazing day for distance running records:

-- Marathon world record, Haile Gebrselassie, Berlin Marathon, 2:04:26. Geb's run bettered Paul Tergat's 2:04:55 set in Berlin in 2003.

-- Record marathon run in Canada - John Kelai, Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, 2:09:30. Kelai bettered Waldemar Cierpinski's 2:09:55, set at the 1976 Olympic Marathon in Montreal. Cierpinski's record is suspect because he allegedly participated in the East German state-sponsored program of performance-enhancing drug use.

-- Half marathon American best, Kara Goucher in her debut half- marathon, 1:06:57, Great North Run Half Marathon, England. Goucher defeated marathon world-record holder Paula Radcliffe who was competing in her first event following the birth of her daughter. Goucher's time does not count as a new American record because the Great North course is downhill. Deena Kastor's record of 1:07:34 still stands.

================================================================ =====CONGRATULATIONS KALIN & DATHAN RITZENHEIN ================================================================ ===== Dathan Ritzenhein and his wife Kalin (Toedebusch) Ritzenhein are the brand-new parents of a daughter, Addison Lee Ann Ritzenhein, born Friday, September 28, 2007 in Eugene, Oregon. The Rockford High School distance star will be among the competitors at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Men's Marathon in New York City, November 3. Kalin Toedebusch was an all-American runner at Colorado and a member of the Rockford relay team that swept all three distance relays (800, mile, DMR) at the adidas Outdoor Championships in 2000.

======================================================= CINDY BARBER RETURNS TO RUNNING WITH A MARATHON VICTORY ======================================================= For several years we missed seeing Cindy Barber (no longer Keeler) on both the national and local running scenes. Cindy reappeared with a splash this last weekend, with a victory at the inaugural Boyne 2 Boyne Marathon. We had a chance to speak with Cindy by phone after her win. Now in the 50-54, the six- time qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials -Women's Marathon was away from running for five years. Cindy returned to running late this spring.

=================================================== RUN VASA, TRAVERSE CITY, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2007 =================================================== Running Fit in Traverse City is putting its expertise into the run formerly known as the Vasa Trail Run. Now called Run Vasa, the race features a 25K run and a 10K run. The course is the wide, beautiful trail through the towering white pines of the Pere' Marquette State forest of Northern Michigan. Named after King Gustav Vasa, a monarch in Sweden several centuries ago, the Vasa Pathway is also host to three of the Midwest's most popular ski events. Both races begin 8:30 am at the Vasa Trail Head. For details, check http://www.runvasa.com.

================================================================ ===== METRO HEALTH GRAND RAPIDS MARATHON INTRODUCES RELAY AND KIDS MARATHON ================================================================ ===== The Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon has a couple of new twists this year. In addition to the marathon and half-marathon on October 28 , runners can enter as part of a 3-5 person relay team. Each runner will run at least one leg of 4 - 6 miles handing off a timing chip to the next team member at each relay exchange zone. Runners who wish to run more than one leg must do consecutive legs. For details on the relay see the race Website: http://www.grandrapidsmarathon.com/relay.aspx

Also new this year is the first-ever Grand Rapids Kids Marathon. The Grand Rapids Marathon teamed up with Gazelle Sports, Girls on the Run, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Foundation, David D. Hunting YMCA and Metro Health to offer the first-ever Kids Marathon in West Michigan. 400 kids have signed up to run or walk onen mile, three times each week, with a friend or family member. By Race Weekend, the children will have covered nearly a marathon distance. They'll run or walk the last 1.2 miles on the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon racecourse, Saturday, October 27, 1:00 pm. For details see

========================================= PUMPKIN TROT, ST. JOHNS, OCTOBER 14, 2007 ========================================= St. Johns City Park is the scene for the Pumpkin Trot 10K run, 5K run and walk and Kids's Dash. The 10k course starts in the park, goes up a hill, onto trails, then dirt roads, with a finish through downtown streets. Events begin at 1:30 pm. The races are part of the annual "Pumpkins in the Park" which features the "Pumpkin Patch", Classic Car Show and Scarecrows lining downtown streets. For more information contact George Campbell, (989) 224-6464, geokath@voyager.net.

================================================================ ===== NEW YORK ROAD RUNNERS CLUB PREVIEWS MEN'S OLYMPIC TRIALS ON VIDEO ================================================================ ===== "Chasing Glory" posts a new video each Tuesday and Thursday and essays by Toni Reavis on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Week 2 featured Dathan & Kalin Ritzenhein and their dog Muenster (Muenster steals the show); Week 3 is featuring the Hansons- Brooks Distance Project. Chasing Glory began September 17 and will continue through November 2. Trials race is November 3. http://www.nyrr.org/races/pro/mens_trials/glory/index2.asp#tuesd ay
