__/ PORTAGE INVITATIONAL, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4 - The sixth annual Portage Invitational is Michigan's biggest high school meet with 4200 registered runners competing in 14 races. Directors Bill Fries and Dan Wytco have made Portage a top-of-the-line event, packed with talent. This year, teams from Ohio, Indiana and Ontario will challenge Michigan's top teams. The course is challenging, hilly and very spectator-friendly. Michigan Runner TV will be there to capture the action. http://portageinvite.com

__/ PITTSBURGH CANCELS 2004 MARATHON - PITTSBURGH, PA (9/ 30/03) -- One of the nation's top marathons will not be staged in 2004. The Pittsburgh Marathon, scheduled for May 2, was officially axed by Mayor Tom Murphy on Tuesday, Sept. 30 because of the city's financial problems.

Murphy, an avid runner, announced the decision because the race did not have a title sponsor on board and because of the city's current financial crisis.

Called the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Pittsburgh marathon for the past eight years, the race would have been run for the 20th time without the cancellation. However, earlier this year, UPMC told the city it could no longer be title sponsor and wanted a lesser role.

__/ SEANA LARSON QUALIFIES FOR OLYMPIC MARATHON TRIALS - Michigan has another U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon qualifier. Seana Larson ran a 2:45:59 at the Quad Cities Marathon in Moline, Illinois last Sunday. She placed second in the race and met the "B" qualifying standard. The women's Olympic Trials will be in St. Louis on April 3, 2004.

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK - "Work is anything a body has to do. Play is anthing a body doesn't have to do."

-- Mark Twain. (From "The Quotable Marathoner", edited by Charles Lyons, The Lyons Press, 2001.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES - SCHEDULE - Race series events are open to Michigan residents; you do not have to register with the Michigan Runner to participate. Each runner's top 10 results will count at the conclusion of the series. Another way to think about this is that each runner's worst results will be thrown out. Missing one race will not hurt anyone's standings. For results and standings see http:// michiganrunner.net/news/raceseries03_standings.html
