PARDON THE INTERRUPTION PARDON THE INTERRUPTION PARDON THE INTERRUPTION

We're making progress: two of the GLSP's five Web sites which were down are now back up. Two up, three to go. We're working on restoring the files for Michigan Runner TV, Runnning Canada TV and Michigan Runner Archive Web sites. We are obviously, sorry for the interruption.

PARDON THE INTERRUPTION PARDON THE INTERRUPTION

================================================================ ====== CHAD SCHIEBER OF MIDLAND DIES OF HEART AILMENT DURING CHICAGO MARATHON ================================================================ ====== The heat-shortened LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon has overwhelmed all other running news this week. We extend our sympathies to the family, friends, and folks in the Midland community who knew police officer Chad Schieber. We hope the hundreds who required medical attention recover to run another day.

There are lessons for race organizers and each of us who run races. Races are complicated events which balance the services provided by the organizers and the individual fitness, decisions and goals of each participant. Chicago's circumstances of heat, humidity, dew point and huge numbers of participants in the demanding distance upset that balance.

Do we expect water at aid stations? sports drink? ice? gu? petroleum jelly? band-aids? Yes, we do. We also are responsible for our own hydration and fuel. I remember one marathon in which I miscalculated and, about mile 18, stopped in a variety store for an energy bar.

The words and opinions about the events in Chicago Sunday are many. Here are links to two: Eric Zorn's column in the Chicago Tribune and the many comments following: http://blogs.chicagotribune.com/news_columnists_ezorn/2007/10/ma rathon-offici.html

A Scientist looks at "heatstroke" and the Chicago Marathon (from letsrun.com): http://scienceofsport.blogspot.com/2007/10/death-at-chicago- marathon-report-and.html

================================================================ ====== HAILE GEBRSELASSIE COMING TO DETROT FOR FREE PRESS / FLAGSTAR MARATHON ================================================================ ====== "DETROIT - (October 7, 2007) - New marathon world record holder Haile Gebrselassie will be in Detroit the weekend of October 20- 21 in a visit that coincides with the Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Marathon. The visit is prompted by involvement in Detroit-based Ethiopian aid organization." For details on this exciting news see http://www.michiganrunner.net/news/gebrselassie_detroit1107.html

============================= MRN ON THE ROAD - GRAND HAVEN ============================= We were in Grand Haven for a golf event and took the opportunity to stop by Running Circles' new location at 205 Washington Street. The new location is just a couple of blocks from the original one and easy to find on the main street with many restaurants and shops.

============================================================= CALVIN COLLEGE TO HOST GREAT LAKES REGIONAL ON NEW X-C COURSE ============================================================= Put the date of Saturday, November 10 on your calendar. Calvin College is hosting the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Cross Country meet for both men and women. The Calvin Knights Men are defending national champions.

The brand new course (men's 8K and women's 6K) is located one mile east of the main campus and borders East Paris Road on east side and Calvin's Nature Preserve on the north. The Start and Finish are located on the Gainey Athletic Soccer Fields. The course features 10 meter wide paths cut through the Calvin property north and west of the Gainey Athletic Complex, wide sweeping turns, a long straight away parallel to the service road, beautiful tree-lined trails, a brief segment that runs through the Gainey Baseball fields and a finish just west of the start near the soccer stadium bleachers. The elevation gains are smooth and gradual except for one steep up and down (run twice) on the north side of the course. The course crosses the service road 4 times for the 6K and 6 times in the 8K. Other footing is very good (for two-year growth). All miles and kilometers are marked.

For details see http://www.calvin.edu/sports/xcregionals/
