__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: SCOTIABANK TORONTO WATERFRONT MARATHON - Check out the Elite Runners Race with Inge Johnson's incredible videography from the back of a motorcycle. __/ PUMPKIN TROT, ST. JOHNS, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15 - St. Johns celebrates the season with the Pumpkins in the Park festival. The Lions and Lioness Club hosts added a 5K race in 1999, then expanded on that success by adding a 10K a few years later. Races begin at 1:00 pm in St. Johns City Park. In addition to the Kids' dash, there are lots of family-friendly activities at the festival: 400 plus decorated pumpkins and scarecrow displays created by children, adults, families and businesses, carnival games, hayrides, and a haunted forest. __/ MRN ON THE ROAD - PORTAGE - Bill Fries and Dan Wytco have been putting on the Portage Invitational cross country meet since 1998 and it just keeps getting better. This year more than 5000 athletes from more than 170 schools competed in 17 different events. Bill, Dan, and scores of volunteers made it all look easy. The racing was remarkable, too. Several teams moved up to larger divisions to see how they could do. Normally Division II, the Dexter boys moved up to Division I and took the team title. It was fun to see a couple of new coaches having an effect. Suzanne Larsen, Fenton, and Jeremy Hurley, Forest Hills East in Grand Rapids, won the Open race that kicked off the meet and led their teams to good showings. __/ FORMER MICHIGAN RUNNER EDITOR DAVE FOLEY WRITES POPULAR BOOK FOR TEACHERS - During the fourteen years Dave Foley edited the Michigan Runner magazine, many runners benefited from his insights and advice. Now school teachers can benefit from Dave's 30 years of experience teaching middle school students. Dave is the author of "The Ultimate Classroom Control Handbook"-- published recently by JIST Publishing. We were treated to Dave's presentation for a class on a Detroit area college campus. Sure wish I'd had his experience to call on when I was substitute teaching. Parents, too, will find Dave's book fun to read and full of useful insights about middle school kids. http://www.jist.com.
