__/ RUNNING NETWORK TV: TIM BROE, OLYMPIAN
When Running Network TV began our series on Tim Broe's Olympic
Dream, Tim's ticket to Athens was anything but certain. After winning the
U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Tim still had to run a qualifying time to earn
his spot on the team. Tim talks about racing in London to qualify for the
Olympic 5000 meter race and about racing in the Olympic Games.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD, CHICAGO
Lasalle Bank and Carey Pinkowski continue to put on a truly remarkable
event. Hefty prize money and time bonuses attracted a field which was
so fast that the top six men finished in under 2:09. The windy city was
indeed windy for the last several miles, meaning that Chicago will have
to keep trying to return both men's and women's world records to the city
that held both in recent years.
We congratulate Brian Sell for his 2:13:21 finish, second among
Americans (after first American Khalid Khannoucci's 2:08:44, his worst
marathon finish ever.) Running Network TV will feature an interview with
Brian in the near future.
__/HEAR BILL RODGERS ON JOHNNY KELLEY
We enjoyed National Public Radio's Robert Siegel interview with Bill
Rodgers shortly after the death of Johnny Kelley last week. You can
hear the interview at http://www.npr.org/rundowns/
segment.php?wfId=4075610, All Things Considered,
October 7. Rodgers, ever the humble legend himself, credits Kelley for
his impact on Boston running and more.
__/ ARTHUR LYDIARD TO LECTURE IN DETROIT & LANSING
Speaking of legends--- Coach Arthur Lydiard will begin a lecture tour
of the US later this month. The tour includes stops in Sterling Heights at
Stevenson High School Auditorium on November 1 and Lansing on
November 2. For updates and times see http://www.fivecircles.org/
Events.htm.

__/ FIRST GENTLEMAN DAN MULHERN WILL RUN DETROIT FREE
PRESS/FLAGSTAR BANK MARATHON LANSING - Carrying a
message of "sound body, sound mind, sound heart,"
First Gentleman Daniel Granholm Mulhern will run in the 27th Annual
Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon on Sunday, October 24. It
will be the first time that Mulhern, 46, has run a marathon distance,
having previously competed in 5k and 10k runs this summer.
"I am running the Marathon because I believe we were made to set
huge goals and go after them. I am inspired by my wife's enormous
goals for Michigan, which include encouraging all of Michigan to get
healthier, and so I'm trying to lead by example," Mulhern said. "I also am
running in tribute to Think Detroit, which does fantastic work to build
character in young people through sports and leadership development."
__/ COLUMBUS MARATHON CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY
We congratulate Mike Collins and the city of Columbus on the 25th
anniversary of the Columbus Marathon. With the varied loop course
through a variety of different neighborhoods, we're not surprised that
USA Today picked Columbus as one of the top ten Fall marathons.
Columbus has relays, kids races, and one of the best Expos around.

__/ NEARLY 500 HAVE SIGNED UP FOR INAUGURAL GRAND
RAPIDS MARATHON
Howie Beardsley of the Grand Rapids Press spoke with Don Kern,
founder of the Grand Rapids Marathon, the first running of which is
scheduled for October 31. Kern is pleased that the registration is
nearing its cap.
According to the Web site, only 20 places are left. The event includes a
half-marathon and a two person relay in addition to the marathon. See

__/ INTERNATIONAL ELITE FIELD SET FOR TORONTO MARATHON
10TH ANNIVERSARY TORONTO - (October 12, 2004) - An international
elite field of world class runners will be vying to set the course records
for the 10th Annual Toronto Marathon on October 17th. With personal
bests of sub 2:11 for the men and below 2:30 for women, it's likely the
course records of 2:15:17 (Damaoui El Mostafa - 2000) for men and
2:37:52 (Kim Webb - 1996) for women will be shattered on Sunday.
The top male and female marathon finishers will go home $25,000
richer, with second place finisher taking in $10,000 each and
$5,000 for third. The awards are given out through 10th place and
include Masters Division for first, second and third. The Canadian Maple
Leaf Award of $1000 goes to the top male and female Canadian
finishers. The Toronto Marathon will once again offer $1,000 for each
full minute below the current course records. http://torontomarathon.com
