__/ GREAT TURTLE HALF MARATHON & 5.7 MILE R/W, MACKINAC ISLAND, SAT, OCT. 21 - We love training on the trails of Mackinac Island's interior and so does John Gault. John and Anne Gault teamed up with Mission Point Resort to offer this terrific Fall race. The views from the trails are worth the challenging hills. After the race, plan to stay on the Island or in nearby Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. Races begin at 11:30 am and you'll want to stay for the Pasta Dinner after the race, 2:15 to 4:00 pm. That's right; the pasta dinner combines with the award ceremony to make for a relaxed and fun time.

__/ NIAGARA FALLSVIEW CASINO INTERNATIONAL MARATHON, NIAGARA FALLS, ON, SUN, OCT 22

- The marathon begins at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, crosses the Peace Bridge, then follows the Niagara River to a dramatic finish at the Falls. The half-marathon is entirely on the Canadian side and also finishes at the Falls. Hotels, restaurants and lots to see and do are all within blocks of the finish line. Events include wheelchair races and a 5K run and walk.

__/ MICHIGAN HS XC UPPER PENINSULA STATE FINALS, HOUGHTON, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21 Coaches, athletes and fans would love to see Michigan combine Upper Peninsula and Lower Peninsula championships for a true state final; for the forseeable future, however, we can expect separate UP and LP events.

Michigan Tech University in Houghton is the site of the Upper Peninsula finals this Saturday, beginning at 10:00 am.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER COLUMNIST, TOM HENDERSON, PUBLISHES NEW BOOK - MR columnist Tom Henderson's third true crime book, "Darker Than Night," was published by St. Martin's Press on Oct. 3. It is the true account of the mysterious disappearance of two Detroit-area deer hunters in 1985,the long investigation that State Police kept alive and how the case was finally solved. The moral: Don't argue with the wrong guys in the wrong bars. The two meet a family of car thieves and deer poachers and were beat to death with baseball bats, then fed to a wood chipper and then to the family pigs. Tom's "Blood Justice" was one of those books I couldn't put down, so I'm looking forward to this one. Available in paperback from

__/ BO HIMEBAUGH - We had some sad news earlier this week from Diane Himebaugh:

"I am just writing from Arizona. I used to run quite a few races in the southern Michigan area. I wanted to let some of my racing friends there know that my husband, Bo, age 53, died Friday, Sept. 29. Bo used to go to all of the races and helped out at some of the events. __/ MRN ON THE ROAD - GRAYLING - Donnie Andersen, the latest Michigan runner to log in 100,000 miles, chose the Hartwick Pines Challenge, a 7.2 and 5K mile run held in October, as one of his favorite runs. We were on hand this year to see the 50+ runners take on the challenge in this beautiful and historic area. The MR has run the course on a couple of occasions and it is one of our favorites as well. Dawn Gee of the area Kiwansis Club is at the helm of this Grayiing area race.
