__/ AUFDEMBERGE QUALIFIES FOR TRIALS IN CHICAGO,
TOO - Thank-you, everybody, who noted that I left Paul
Aufdemberge off the list of Michigan people who qualified for
the Olympic Marathon Trials at the LaSalle Bank Chicago
Marathon. Paul ran 2:21:55 for 3rd in the 35-39 age group, 4
2nd overall. Paul, the only 3-time Michigan Runner of the
Year (1996, 1999, 2000), has been taking home prize
money in Michigan, US and International races for many
years.
Paul himself also alerted us: "A former Michigan runner who
fared well was Katy Hollbacher (Petoskey H.S., U-M '97), no
w of San Francisco. She
also just bettered the qualifying standard, running 2:47:51
(33rd among women at Chicago.)
__/ RITZ RETURNS - At last Saturday's pre-National NCAA
Cross Country meet at the University of Northern Iowa in Ce
dar Falls, Iowa, Dathan Ritzenhein returned to form, winning
the 8000 meter Gold race in 23:17 and leading Colorado to
the Gold team title. Eastern Michigan's Gavin Thompson
finished fifth. Michigan's Nick Willis finished seventh in the
Purple race, leading Michigan to a third place finish in the
Purple standings. Tim Moore led Notre Dame to a ninth
place finish in the Gold race. In the women's races,
Michigan showed significant depth as Rebecca Walter led
the Wolverines to fourth place among the Purple teams.
The pre-Nationals serve as a warm up for the NCAA
Division I finals, which will be held at the same location,
November 24. Michigan State did not compete.
__/ PORTAGE INVITATIONAL BEGINS SHOWING ON
MICHIGAN RUNNER TV - If you were unable to watch this
exhilarating meet in person, you can check out Michigan
Runner TV's coverage. Shows begin today with Division 4
races at michiganrunner.tv/2003portage/. Additional races
will follow this week.

__/ CLEVELAND'S COUP: RICH WILLIAMS JOINS
CLEVELAND RITE-AID MARATHON - The Rite-Aid
Cleveland Marathon announced October 15 that Rich
Williams has signed on as a consultant for the Cleveland
race. Williams, who served as Race Director for the
Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, will now field operational,
marketing, structuring and restructuring elements for the
Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon. "Rich is a wonderful addition
to our team," says Race Director Ralph Staph. "He brings
much knowledge, experience and insight of both the
running industry and the running community to the table."
The Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon takes place on April 25,
2004. The new course takes runners through downtown
Cleveland and past such
Landmarks as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the
Cleveland Browns' stadium. Runners pass scenic Lake Eri
e and run through Clevdeland's neighborhoods and landma
rks. http://www.clevelandmarathon.com
-- From Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon press release.
__/ AKRON DOUBLES - Can you believe it? Several tough
individuals ran both the Road Runner Akron Marathon in
Akron on October 11 and the Akron General Towpath
Marathon the next day, October 12. In fact, Sally Lewis of the
Runner's Supply Shop in Akron said she printed up several
special shirts with "52.4" for those who accomplished the
double. One
of the doublers is Michigan Runner senior photographer
Carter Sherline.
__/ FRONT-LINE RACING TEAMS WIN TWO AT AKRON
RELAYS - The Road Runner Akron Relays were made to or
der for Fred Vanhala and the Front Line Racing Teams.
Front Line teams won two championships in two categories
in the first USATF Marathon Relay Championships:
USATF Men's 40-49, 1st, 2:29:11
Non USATF Men's Open, 1st, 2:38:53
__/ JURCEVICH SECOND AT COLUMBUS; COURSE
RECORDS FALL - We had a chance to talk with Jim Jurcevi
ch (Michigan State, All-American) before last Sunday's
Columbus Marathon. Jurcevich hoped to run 2:14 or better
on the fast, flat Columbus course. "Why 2:14?" I asked. "Bec
ause that's what it will take to win." He was right. Ronald Mo
gaka won in 2:14:10, but Jurcevich's 2:15:13 PR was good f
or second. Jurcevich now resides in Dublin, Ohio.
Lyudmyla Pushkina (Ukraine) set a new course record of
2:28:15 for the win and Ernst Van Dyk (South Africa) set a
new wheeler's record of 1:26:47, breaking Crim winner
Krige Shabort's previous record of 1:27:13.
Marybeth Reader (3:09:59) and Mika Lavaque-Manty (2:48:1
8) were the first Michigan finishers.
__/ ANN ARBOR GODDESSES BEAT GODDESSES IN
TRAINING AT DETROIT - Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank
Race Director Pat Ball corrected our coverage of the two-per
son female relay teams. The Ann Arbor Goddesses (Lisa
Hesse, Wander Gunderson, 3:03:02, registered in the
masters division) finished ahead of the Goddesses in Traini
ng team (Dina Glendenning, Amy Wolfgang, 3:03:27)
registered in the open division). We certainly don't want to
underestimate master runners, especially master goddess
es!
