__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"I did it!" -- First Gentleman Dan Mulhern echoed many other first-timers who finished their first marathon at the Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank Marathon on Sunday.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: DETROIT FREE PRESS / FLAGSTAR BANK MARATHON

"Big time running is back in Detroit," someone said. Check out Michigan Runner's video coverage of the 27th running of the Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank Marathon, Half Marathon, Marathon Relay and 5K to see more than 10,000 runners, walkers and wheelers cruise Detroit and Windsor.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD: DETROIT

The 13.1 miles of the half marathon was over before I knew it. The half-marathon course took in Corktown, Mexican town, the Ambassador Bridge, the Windsor waterfront with its striking outdoor sculptures and view of the Detroit skyline, the tunnel with its underwater mile and finish in Ford Field.

We especially enjoyed the music in all its variety: champion fiddler Jeremy Kittel in Corktown, Mariachi Nuevo Zapopan in Mexican Town, the bagpipper in Windsor, and "Half the Battle" near Joe Louis Arena. "Half the Battle" was so loud we could hear them all the way across the river in Windsor. One runner was actually skipping rope as he made his way through the tunnel. We want to congratulate Pat Ball Dglugokinski and her committee for the huge jump in participation, for the terrific half marathon, for the energetic racing of the relay teams, and for the large number of exhibitors at the Whole Foods Health and Fitness Expo.

__/ LOCAL YOUTH AMBASSADORS RUN AT DETROIT FREE PRESS/ FLAGSTAR BANK MARATHON 5K FUN RUN

FLINT - 17 kids and 11 adults from the Bridges Ambassadors Fitness & Running Club, an Afterschool running program held at Durant-Tuuri- Mott Elementary School in Flint, Michigan, attended the 27th running of the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon on Sunday, October 24. At the invitation of Race Director Patricia (Ball) Dlugokinski, the group was invited to the VIP Pasta Party at the Detroit Athletic Club. Along with students from Butzel Elementary School in Detroit, the Bridges Ambassadors were recognized by Michigan's First Gentleman, Daniel Mulhearn, for their training efforts.

Dressed in their "Crim - Coolest Race In Michigan" sweatshirts, the kids ran the Michigan Food and Beverage Kids Mini Marathon, held in conjunction with the St. John Health 5K Fun Run and Fitness Walk.

The collaboration between the Bridges Ambassadors Fitness & Running Club and the Crim Festival of Races is a model program being evaluated under a new national initiative, Running Rocks: Fun and Fitness Afterschool. This pilot initiative has been created by two national organizations - Running USA and Afterschool Alliance - who are determined to turn the tide on youth obesity and its related illnesses. -- from an October 27, 2004 press release

__/ GRAND RAPIDS LAUNCHES NEW MARATHON ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31

The Grand Rapids Marathon is already successful by one measure-- registrations are closed for the marathon, half-marathon and two- person relay set for Sunday, October 31. Races start at 8:00 am. Walkers and "velocity-challenged" runners can start an hour early and there is no time limit for finishing. If you are in the neighborhood, come out and cheer on the runners. For course info see

__/ DETROIT THANKSGIVING DAY TURKEY TROT WILL HAVE CERTIFIED COURSE

If your 10K times are getting better and better this season, your Detroit Turkey Trot 10K time can now count for the Michigan Runner Best of Times.

The course start and finish returns to Cobo Center and is now certified. Also new this year is a designated runners' bleacher section for watching the Detroit's Thanksgiving Day Parade. http:// detroitturkeytrot.org/
