__/ OOPS - Our apologies to everyone who received a confusing message or two on Sunday. The message was supposed to be a test of our newsletter's new look, complete with photos. Unfortunately the "test" found its way to many other mail boxes. We're sorry to have contributed to anyone's junk mail.

__/ GREAT WEEKEND TO WATCH CROSS-COUNTRY --MHSAA LP CROSS COUNTRY FINALS AT MIS, SATURDAY - Michigan Runner editor Scott Sullivan expects the first race to be one of the most exciting as D4 Central Lake's Stephan Shay takes on defending champion Liam Boylan-Pett of Bath. Action begins at 10:00 am, Michigan International Speedway, Brooklyn. Team action should be hot, too as D1 Milford boys, Clarkston girls and Rockford girls are nationally ranked.

--MSU HOSTS BIG TEN CROSS COUNTRY, SUNDAY- Michigan State University is hosting the Big Ten Cross Country Championships Sunday at Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing. The women's race begins at 10:45; the men's race begins at 11:30. The Spartan women return five runners who were on last year's second place team; the Wolverine women return three. Michigan men will be led by Nick Willis and Nate Brannen as they take on No. 2 Wisconsin.

__/ PORTAGE INVITATIONAL CONTINUES ON MICHIGAN RUNNER TV - Watch eight varsity races develop at the large, well-organized, international, meet. See the Division 3 boys' furious sprint to the finish for fourth in one of ten videos. Also, meet directors Bill Fries and Dan Wytco tell us why they started the event which hosted more than 4000 runners this year. http://michiganrunner.tv/2003portage/.

__/ BIG BIRD HAS BIG PLANS TO CELEBRATE 25TH, ROSEVILLE, NOV. 9- Race director Tony Lipinski tells us that plans are going well for the 25th Big Bird on Sunday, November 9. "We will have plenty of giveaways for participants from Petitpren Distributors, Hansons Running shops and Longhorn Steakhouse. Petitpren is also providing rink-style jackets and duffle bags for the age division winners in the 10K. Hansons will provide gloves for each runner and Longhorn is providing headbands (ear warmers) for each runner. Each of them are also providing other raffle prizes to go along with 25 frozen turkeys to be raffled off-compliments of Christian Financial Credit Union." Michigan Runner TV will be there to capture the action.

__/ HOFFMASTER TRAIL RUN, NORTON SHORES, NOV. 8 - The 10th annual 10K (more or less) starts at 10 a.m. on a course that's insanely beautiful, boasting ups and down onloose sand, plus a 1.5 mile stretch alongside Lake Michigan. Proceeds help the local Salvation Army buy Thanksgiving dinners for the needy. Phone David Paulsen at (231) 780-1399 or email dpaulsen@novagate.com. -- Scott Sullivan

__/ GARY MORGAN QUALIFIES FOR 6TH OLYMPIC TRIALS - Gary Morgan wrote on Monday with this news: "On Oct. 19th at Hauppauge, New York, I placed 2nd in the national 50k race walk with a time of 4:36:31. That qualified me for the Olympic trials. This will be my 6th Olympic trials." Morgan won the trials in 1988 and went on to compete in the 50K race-walk in Seoul; he placed second in the 1992 trials. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Track and Field, will be in Sacramento, California, July 8-18, 2004.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV INTERVIEW: ING NEW YORK CITY MARATHON'S RACE DIRECTOR: ALLAN STEINFELD - Imagine being the "go-to" guy for this Sunday's ING New York City Marathon. Allan Steinfeld is the guy and Michigan Runner TV talked with him about the challenges of managing a race through New York City's five boroughs. http://michiganrunner.tv/2003steinfeld/

Six-time Crim winner Catherine Ndereba is the women's favorite. Sean "P. Diddy" Combs is running too. NBC promises live coverage from 9am to 2pm and highlights from 2pmm to 3pm on Sunday.

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK - "On Tuesday we had what we call `the world's toughest workout:' 40 200's. The girls have to do it under 50 seconds; the guys have to do it under 40. I usually average under 37 seconds." -- Nicole Bush, Portage Invitational Division 3 Girls winner and holder of three MHSAA LP Cross Country titles. The Wyoming-Kellogsville senior will be trying for a 4th at the MHSAA LP X-C finals on Saturday. Scott Sullivan interviewed Nicole for Michigan Runner TV.
