-- RED OCTOBER RUN, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7 - Cynthia Cook and the folks at Oakwood Hospital in Wayne can take the bow now for one of the best-managed races on the calendar. The 10K run and 5K run or walk courses are flat, fast and bring out some serious competition. Not only is the kids one mile run free, but all kids get a goody bag. Some lucky folks will win chances to choose from a wide array of prizes and everyone can join in the post-race feast. Think home-baked goodies, cider, hot dogs, fruit, bagels and more. Kids run begins at 9:00; 10K - 9:50; 5K run and walk - 10:00.

-- RUNNING FIT 20 MILE TRAINING RUN, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7 - Running Fit has teamed up with Wayne County Parks to make your long run an adventure. The start and finish location will be at Nankin Mills on Hines Drive, just east of Ann Arbor Trail. Expect aid every two miles (water, sports drink and GU), accurate mile marks and food and fun at the finish. The run will be out and back, traffic free, and on the roads showcasing the beauty of the park. The date is 3 weeks out from the Detroit Free Press Marathon.

-- PORTAGE INVITATIONAL, PORTAGE, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7 - This large, prestigous, high school cross country meet inclues an open 5K on the cross country course at 8:30 am, before the 17 high school and middle school races begin at 9:00. Go for the Open 5K, then stay to watch the colorful competition among high school runners from Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario. Michigan Runner TV will be there to record the action.

-- HIDDEN FOREST, CLARKSTON, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 8 - This is one of the most scenic of Fall races. Independence Oaks park offers wood chip trails, a lake, changing colors and some challenging hills. Three different distances (2.5K, 5.5K and 8.5K) take in different loops around Crooked Lake. All races start at 9:30 am, Twin Chimney Pavilion.

__/ RITZ MAKES 1:01:23 HALF MARATHON DEBUT - Dathan Ritzenhein traveled to England Sunday to take on many of the world's best in his debut at the half marathon distance. Why the BUPA Great North Run? Ritz wanted to see if he could match strides with several of the world and Olympic marathon champions in the field. Ritz placed third in the race-- a showing which should provide some confidence before his marathon debut at the ING New York City Marathon next month.
