__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"It's a big-city marathon and it's here to stay," -- Don Kern, founder and race director of the inaugural Grand Rapids Marathon, October 31, 2004 __/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: 2003 MHSAA LOWER PENINSULA CROSS COUNTRY FINALS

The Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn hosts all four divisions of the Michigan High School Athletic Association Lower Peninsula Cross Country Finals on the same day. As coaches, athletes and the media get ready for the 2004 finals on Saturday, November 6, you can check out the drama, the action and some surprises of the 2003 event.

__/ ARTHUR LYDIARD DRAWS COACHES, RUNNERS UTICA, MICHIGAN (11/1/04)--A who's who of Michigan running turned out to see the legendary coach, Arthur Lydiard, in person, at Utica High School Monday evening. Sponsors Keith and Kevin Hanson of Hansons Running Shops, Curt Munson and Brian Jones of Playmakers, and Ed and Sue Kozloff of the Motor City Striders were all on hand to welcome the 87 year old New Zealand coach. Coach Lydiard also appeared at Playmakers in Okemos on Tuesday evening as part of his U.S. lecture tour. Coach Lydiard's presentation included video of some Olympic athletes he coached who won gold medals: Peter Snell, Lasse Viren and Billy Mills. Coach Lydiard demonstrated a sharp mind and a sense of humor as spoke about the influential training methods he developed and answered many questions from the audience.

My favorite moment was when Michigan's own legendary coach, Kermit Ambrose, looking a lot younger than his 90+ years, said he was surprised that Coach Lydiard remembered that Ambrose had coached Jack Batchelder. Ambrose then stood in line with others to get his copy of "Running with Lydiard" signed by the younger coach.

The movie, "Five Thousand Meters, Nothing Comes Easy" is expected to have its world premiere in Peoria, Illinois on Saturday, November 27. The movie features Bolota Asmeron, Ryan Bak, Tim Broe, Adam Goucher, Matt Lane, Mark Menefee, Jonathan Riley, Dathan Ritzenhein, Jorge Torres, and Coach Ron Warhurst.

Peoria native and 2004 Olympian in the 5000 meter race, Tim Broe, gave us the heads up on the date. You can see the movie's trailer at
