FALLSVIEW CASINO RESORT INTERNATIONAL MARATHON -- Our
videos began last week and continue this week with the 5K, Half-
Marathon and Half-Marathon Walk. The Half-Marathon includes an
interview with the winner of that race, Josephat Ongeri. Josephat
followed that win with his win of the Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank
Marathon the next week. The marathon will be posted by Friday,
November 3.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - NIAGARA FALLS, OCTOBER 20-22 - What
could be a better destination marathon than Niagara Falls? In recent
years, Niagara Falls has more attractions-- everything from the Fallsview
Casino Resort, an elegant new hotel, casino and shopping complex
with spectacular views of the Falls, to various fun-houses that keep kids
entertained. The parkway along the Falls and the Niagara river is one of
the most scenic places in the world to run. Jim and Ruth Ralston put on
a terrific event on a beautiful and historic international course, the site of
the 1984 and 1988 US Olympic Marathon trials.
__/ MICHIGAN HIGH SCHOOL LOWER PENINSULA CROSS
COUNTRY FINALS, BROOKLYN, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4 -
Runners representing the best of all four high school divisions gather at
the Michigan International Speedway on Saturday for a wonderful cross
country festival. The single site is great for the media and for fans and
we're always impressed that races begin on time. For schedules,
participating teams and individuals and parking information, see http://
mhsaa.com/.
__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - DETROIT AND WINDSOR, OCTOBER 27-29
- Our booth this year featured Running Canada TV and the Canadian
miles of the Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank Marathon and Half
Marathon. We saw many old friends and made some new ones during
the Whole Foods Health and Fitness Expo. Some highlights:
-- Coach Bill Squires was with Judy Santoni in the InSport booth and
was happy to talk about a couple of the athletes he's currently coaching.
He's been working with a guy from Kansas City and a woman from
California who have qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Marathon
Trials. Coach is excited to have one of each to follow in 2007 and 2008.
-- Bart Yasso left a windy, rainy Washington, D.C. to come to a rainy,
windy Detroit on Saturday. Bart was the featured speaker at Saturday
night's pasta dinner.
-- Olympian Gary Morgan put his race-walking and pacing skills to a
new use on Sunday; Gary paced half-marathon walkers at a 17 minute
per mile pace. Those who stuck with Gary reached the tunnel before the
cut-off time.
-- One young woman stopped by our Running Canada booth looking for
marathons during hockey season. She chose to run her Fall marathon in
Detroit because she could see the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night
before Sunday's marathon.
-- The Official Marathon and Half Marathon Technical Merchandise
Collection from New Balance was a hit. Curt Munson, Brian Jones, Dave
Peterson and folks from New Balance in Farmington Hills and
Playmakers in Okemos were busy as gear flew off the hangers. The
snazzy black and white Raptor jacket with embroidered color logo is my
new favorite jacket. Now I wish I had gotten the matching pants.
-- Lots of folks at the Whole Foods Expo and Sunday during the race
were sporting Detroit Tigers gear. Although we were a little disappointed
that the baseball party ended before marathon weekend, the Tigers had
a great run. We think baseball teams peak just like runners do and the
Tigers peaked during their seven-game playoff run with the Yankees
and the Athletics.
We'd like to congratulate Pat Ball, Doug Kurtis, Joe Baldwin, Bob Smith,
Ann Kelly, the Cities of Detroit and Windsor and scores of marathon
staff, volunteers and sponsors who put on this growing international
event.
__/ DATHAN RITZENHEIN AND KATIE MCGREGOR DEBUT AT ING
NEW YORK CITY MARATHON ON SUNDAY -- The field is loaded with
Olympic marathoners and world record holders (Deena Kastor, Meb
Keflezghi, Paul Tergat, Catherine Ndereba, Stefano Baldini) but we'll be
watching Dathan Ritzenhein and Katie McGregor make their first efforts
at the marathon distance. In fact, Ritz made the front page of
yesterday's New York Times an article: "In Boulder, Runners Gather in
Guarded Isolation"- http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/31/sports/
othersports/31boulder.html?ex=1319950800&en=75f6484aaced8a4e&
ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss.
__/ ING NEW YORK CITY MARATHON TO BE WEBCAST - How will we
be watching? Online: The ING NYC Marathon will be webcast by NBC
Sports and Media Zone, on demand. Sign up, $4.99: http://
www.mediazone.com/channel/marathon/2006/ny/index.jsp.
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES - GEORGE GAWTHROP - We
had a nice call from George Gawthrop who ran nine of the eleven
possible events in the Michigan Runner Race Series. George competes
in one of the toughest age groups in Michigan, 65-69. A resident of
Flushing, George has been running for 27 years and says he "really had
fun" discovering different races across the state. Among his favorites
were the Playmakers Autumn Classic 8K in Haslett. He really enjoyed
the wooded course, running by the lake and meeting Bobby Crim. He
also liked Steve's Run in Dowagiac where "the whole town seems to be
involved."
