================== HAPPY THANKSGIVING ==================

'Twas the night of Thanksgiving, But I just couldn't sleep. I tried counting backwards; I tried counting sheep. The leftovers beckoned -

The dark meat and white; But I fought the temptation With all of my might.

Tossing and turning With anticipation, The thought of a snack Became infatuation.

So, I raced to the kitchen, Flung open the door And gazed at the fridge Full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey And buttered potatoes, Pickles and carrots, Beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling So plump and so round, 'Til all of a sudden I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling, Floating into the sky, With a mouthful of pudding And a handful of pie

But, I managed to yell As I soared past the trees... Happy eating to all - pass the cranberries, please.

May your stuffing be tasty, May your turkey be plump. May your potatoes 'n gravy Have nary a lump. May your yams be delicious, May your pies take the prize, May your Thanksgiving dinner Stay off of your thighs.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving day.!!! -- From our friend Jack Kripl, who celebrates Thanksgiving in his Bermuda home

================================================================ ========== GREAT PERFORMANCES - CROSS COUNTRY - NICOLE BUSH 5TH, RACHELLE MALETTE 5TH ================================================================ ========== We congratulate Nicole Bush for her All-American 5th place finish (20:14) at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, Terre Haute, Indiana, Monday, November 19. Nicole led the Michigan State Spartan Women to a team fifth place, too.

Kudos, too, to Rachelle Malette, Wayne State, who finished 5th (20:48) at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships in Joplin, Missouri, Saturday, November 17.

================================================================ ========== MRN ON THE ROAD: SAULT STE. MARIE, BRIMLEY, ISHPEMING, NEWBERRY, ESCANABA, HANNAVILLE RESERVATION, CUT RIVER GORGE, GAYLORD ================================================================ ========== On a swing through Michigan's Upper Peninsula, we stopped by the Chi Mukwa Community Recreation Center in Sault Ste. Marie and talked with Heather Smith about the Sault Ste. Marie tribe's Billy Mills fun run and the very successful kids running club, Chi Nodin. The Chi Mukwa Center with it's indoor track and two ice arena's is open to everyone in the community. Tribal chairman Aaron Payment, a runner himself, is among those inspiring kids to take up our favorite sport.

An article in the Marquette Mining Journal discussed the Ishpeming School Board's difficulty in funding repairs for their brand-new track surface. The contractors offered a free surface for their tennis courts and claimed that runners wouldn't notice the differences in elevation anyway. Really????

Since our UP trip coincided with the first four days of firearm deer season, we figured the woods were a good place not to be. Escanaba's waterfront was a great choice for a workout as the sun rose over Bay de Noc. We found the 8th Street Coffehouse open for terrific coffee and bagels. 8th Street Coffeehouse hosts weekend concerts and was crew headquarters for Jeff Daniels' movie, Escanaba in da Moonlight.

We were on the Hannahville Reservation to check out the Island Resort & Casino's Sweetgrass Golf Course which due to open July 1, 2008. Golf courses in the off-season are another safe place to be during deer season. During a walk around the course we looked for wildlife, found tracks for deer and racoon. Hananahville tribal attorney, Tony Mancilla knows there is bear around, but "He's not a mean bear."

One of my favorite places in the UP is the Cut River Gorge between Epoufette and Brevard on Route 2. A couple of miles of paths and trails take you over the Cut River Bridge, down to the river and out to Lake Michigan. Worth the stop anytime you're traveling Route 2.

==================================================== KAREN HARVEY TAKES FLORIDA STATE WOMEN TO THE PODIUM ==================================================== When University of Michigan All American Karen Harvey took up coaching with the same energy and determination she brought to the track and the roads. Her University of Illinois women's team went from nowhere to 5th place at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships two years ago.

This year, Florida State University recruited Harvey to revamp it's struggling women's cross country and distance running. They may be a little surprised at how soon things improved. Florida State Women, led by 3rd place Susan Kuijken and 6th place Barbara Parker, placed third at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship in Terre Haute.

Harvey's husband, Olympian Kevin Sullivan, is a volunteer assistant coach for the Seminoles.

=========================================================== MASTERS TRACK & FIELD COMMITTEE SEEKS YOUR INPUT AND SKILLS =========================================================== "One component of the 2005 Strategic Plan for USATF Masters Track & Field was to design a membership skills survey that would help to 'develop a larger base of volunteers, officials, organizers, administrators, committees, meet management, etc.' The initiative was one of the strategies presented to meet the overall goal (Grass Roots) to "encourage local USATF associations & regions to actively promote and recognize (volunteer) opportunities for Masters Track & Field...."

"In an effort to continue moving forward, USATF urges you to complete the Skills Survey, and return it so that USATF may be aware of your interests and areas of expertise.

"Thank you in advance for your support of this project which will provide valuable insight on how to make enhancements to USATF's Masters Track & Field programs and events." -- USATF Press Release Survey is on the Web: http://www.usatf.org/groups/Masters/issurvey.pdf
