MICHIGAN CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS PLACE IN ALL
THREE NCAA DIVISIONS:
__/ RITZ IS BACK! WINS NCAA DIVISION I CROSS
COUNTRY TITLE - WATERLOO, IOWA (11/24/03) - Dathan
Ritzenhein (Ritz) pulled away from Stanford's Ryan Hall in
the last 400 meters of the 10K race to claim the 2003 NCAA
Division I Cross Country title in 29:14. On a clear, cold day
with sharp, gusty winds, the Colorado red-shirt sophomore
from Rockford, Michigan, showed that his talent has
returned after injuries forced him out of action last year.
The University of Northern Iowa hosted the meet at the Irv
Warren Golf Course in tough weather conditions
reminiscent of the 2000 championship at Ames, Iowa.
Ryan Hall (second in 29:15) led the Stanford men to their
second straight title, placing four runners in the top six (24
points). The Stanford men were so dominant that Don Sage,
their sixth runner, finished as All- American in thirteenth
place, but didn't contribute to the team score.
Eastern Michigan's Gavin Thompson led for much of the
race and finished third in 29:17.
Wisconsin's young team finished second (174 points) for
the second year, Northern Arizona finished third (190
points), and a jubilant Iona College finished just 1 point
behind for 4th place (191 points), the highest finish for any
Iona team at a national championship event.
North Carolina's Shalene Flanagan (19:36) won the
individual title for the second straight year, while an ecstatic
Sara Bei (3rd, 19:49) led the Stanford women to the team
title (120 points) after finishing as runners' up in 2002.
Providence College's Kim Smith (2nd, 19:42) helped her
team to the podium and third place (222 points). Brigham
Young's second place (128) continued a remarkable
seventh straight year as either the first or second team.
University of Michigan women, led by All-American, Rebecca
Walter's 17th place, were fourth (232 points.)
Colorado women were fourth with Rockford's Kalin
Toedebusch contributing to the score as Colorado's second
scorer. Michigan State's Michelle Carson also earned All
American honors with a twelfth place finish (20:13).
Other Michigan results:
Men: Nate Brannen, Michigan (14th, 29:54) - All American
Nick Willis, Michigan, (15th, 29:54) - All Amercan
Todd Mobley, Notre Dame, (27th, 30:06)
Tim Moore, Notre Dame, (30:48)
Michigan - team: 9th (335 points)
Central Michigan - team: 18th (437 points)
Women:
Kristie Kiefer, Oakland University (21:33)
Linsey Blaisdell, Wisconsin (22:34)
Michigan State - team: 17th (435 points)

__/ CALVIN COLLEGE WINS SECOND DIVISION III MEN'S
CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP - HANOVER, IN
(11/22/03) - For the first time in NCAA Division III cross
country history, a school tallied six all-Americans as men's
team champion Calvin College (Mich.) placed six runners in
the top 35 on Saturday at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex on
the campus of Hanover College.
Wartburg College (Iowa) junior Josh Moen earned the
individual title to mark the first time the top individuals hailed
from the same school, as Missy Buttry won the women's
race.
Moen, a junior, won in a course-record 24:34.4 in the
eight-kilometer event. He easily outdistanced Widener
University's Macharia Yuot, who finished second in 25:03.1.
Calvin won the men's team championship with a 48 points,
marking only the second time in NCAA Division III history
that a team scored fewer than 50 points in a meet. North
Central College (Ill.) scored 32 points to win the 1993 NCAA
title.
The title was the second for Calvin, which also earned the
2000 NCAA crown.
Calvin had its top six runners finish in the first 19 spots.
Junior David Haagsma led the effort with a fifth-place finish
in 25:24.1. Junior Hendrik Kok, who won the Great Lakes
Regional, was sixth in 25:24.8.
For the third time in five years, the Middlebury College
women's cross country team has captured the NCAA
Championship. For complete results see

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK - "If he stays healthy and we train
smart, then we'll discover the breadth of his talent."
-- Colorado coach Mark Wetmore on Dathan Ritzenhein's
win at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships,
quoted by Dick Patrick of USA Today, November 25, 2003.
__/ AMBER SMITH SIGNS WITH COLORADO - Michigan
Runner Editor Scott Sullivan alterted us to this news from
Marquette Mining Journal: "ISHPEMING ? One of the best
high school distance runners ever in the Upper Peninsula
will leave Michigan when she begins her college career next
fall. All-American Amber Smith of Westwood High School
has signed a national letter of intent to attend, and run for,
the University of Colorado, her mother, Mary Smith, reported
Tuesday. Mary Smith said Amber has accepted an athletic
scholarship covering 80 percent of her expenses at the
Boulder school and that Amber, who has a 4.0 grade-point
average, might also receive an academic scholarship.
Smith was also recruited by such schools as Notre
Dame and Stanford. Coach Mark Wetmore's Colorado
Buffaloes are ranked sixth in NCAA Division I in women's
cross country. Smith signed with Colorado on Sunday, less
than two weeks after learning she has been named Miss
Cross Country by the Michigan cross country coaches
association. Earlier this fall, she was named Michigan High
School Runner of the Year by Michigan Runner magazine. In
Smith's most recent high school competition, she set a
U.P. cross country finals record with a time of 17:53.72 while
winning her fourth U.P. Division 2 title. She is also the
defending U.P. Division 2 track champion in the 800-, 1,600-
and 3,200-meter runs. Up next for Smith is the Foot Locker
Midwest Regionals on Nov. 29 in Kenosha, Wis. The top
eight runners at the regional meet will qualify for the Foot
Locker National Championship two weeks later in San
Diego. Last fall, she took second in the regional race and
then fifth at the national championship, earning first-team
All-America honors with a personal-best time of 17:48 over
3.1 miles."
__/ KRISTIE KIEFFER MAKES CROSS COUNTRY HISTORY
AT OAKLAND UNIVERISTY - We thank Laura Murphy for
pointing out that Oakland University's Kristie Kieffer was
selected to participate in the Division I Cross Country
Championships. In fact, Kieffer is the top runner for the
Golden Grizzlies and the school's first national qualifier in
women's cross country. Kieffer finished 13th in a field of 214
at the Great Lakes Regional to earn one of two at-large bids
for regional individuals.
